Large numbers edit

I've created a testcase page Template:Greek numeral/testcases to check the numerals produced by the template. It helped find a couple of LaTeX error but also raised a number of questions about the handeling of large numbers.

Firstly it only seems to work upto 999,999. Numbers above 1,000,000 don't display anything above the Myriad sign.

Secondly the number produced don't seem to match the other cases where the Myarid notation is used. In Greek numeral we have

In Ancient Greek, Myriad notation is used for numbers larger than 9,999, e.g.  ͵εωοεʹ for 1,755,875.

but the template renders {{greek numeral|1755875}} as  ͵εωοε´. Also on Myriad we have

Multiples were written above this sign, so that for example   would equal 4,582×10,000 or 45,820,000.

The template {{greek numeral|45820000}} as  , a very different symbol.

Looking for a source for how these should be rendered MacTutor Greek numerals seems pretty good.

We do need to cope with these numbers as the greek numerals are included in {{Infobox number}} which includes 142,857, 2,147,483,647, 9,223,372,036,854,775,807. The last can be done in Myriad notation but might be possible in the Apollonius's representation discussed in the MacTutor article.--Salix alba (talk): 23:01, 4 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Great. I doubt the Greeks ever contemplated such numbers. --Salix alba (talk): 11:25, 10 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Salix alba it looks like Archimedes dealt with much larger numbers in the The Sand Reckoner, and did it while using the Myriad notation too. Gts-tg (talk) 11:56, 10 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Salix alba thanks for the checking, I've just noticed the comments above. For the time being I have disabled Greek numerals greater than 9999 (anything in myriad notation) from displaying in {{Infobox number}} and I will have a look at what the problem with the myriad notation is (MacTutor link looks good). Thanks again. Gts-tg (talk) 05:24, 10 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Salix alba I got the problem resolved by changing some of the logic, as you can see above, the examples now display the correct values (you can also check against the examples in the MacTutor website). I am enabling back the myriad notation in the template for numbers greater than 9999. It is particularly interesting to have a look at 9,223,372,036,854,775,807. Thanks again for your help. Ancient version with uppercase only? edit

Is there a need for a version without any lowercase letters? See Talk:Myriad#Uppercase/Lowercase. —DIV (194.193.146.160 (talk) 08:59, 3 January 2019 (UTC))Reply
