Basketball edit

Request the addition of

| link alias-basketball = DR Congo {{{mw|men's}}} national basketball team

for the basketball templates Mk32 (talk) 21:11, 4 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Republic of the Congo edit

I suggest someone adds to the Related templates: Template:Country data Republic of the Congo (Brazzaville). This is the other existing Congo state now, and very confusing. Needs disambiguation constantly. Bye -DePiep (talk) 21:00, 8 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

DR Congo redirect edit

There is also the Template:Country data DR Congo redirection. It needs to be added. --Moyogo/ (talk) 04:36, 24 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Flag variant 2003-2006 edit

Could somebody add the flag as used between 2003-2006, please.CroesJ (talk) 15:22, 1 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

The 2003-2006 flag is currently available as flag alias-1960. The 1960 variant should be changed to File:Flag of Congo-Léopoldville (1960-1963).svg, and a new variant 2003 should be added with the file Flag of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2003-2006).svg. Unnecessary redirect of DR Congo national football team edit

Please, edit these two lines in the protected Template:Country data Democratic Republic of the Congo:

| link alias-football = Congo DR national football team
| name alias-football = Congo DR

Replace Congo DR with DR Congo in both lines, because Congo DR national football team is currently redirected back to the DR Congo national football team.
Also, the "youth" templates such as

No !!! It's even worse. I wanted it this way:
| link alias-football = DR Congo {{{mw|}}} national football team
| name alias-football = DR Congo
Maiō T. (talk) 16:36, 10 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
  Done. It's fixed now. Cheers, LittleMountain5 04:42, 11 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Almost done. This template is still not working with DR Congo youth teams, e.g. :
code {{fbu|20|COD}} creates   DR Congo – result: DR Congo national football team (instead of DR Congo national under-20 football team).
I think the line ...
| link alias-football = DR Congo {{{mw|}}} national football team
must be edited to something like ...
| link alias-football = DR Congo {{{mw|}}} national {{{age|}}} football team
Am I right? Maiō T. (talk) 13:59, 11 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Template-protected edit request on 3 July 2015 edit

Please add one common line for all sports:
| shortname alias = DR Congo
instead of plenty of link- & name aliases. I think it should work. (By Template:Country data F.S. Micronesia it works)

Thanks, Maiō T. (talk) 15:02, 3 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Not done: The shortname alias parameter is not only used by sports flag templates; the general-purpose {{flagcountry}} also uses it, as do the military flag templates ({{Army}}, {{Navy}} and {{Air force}}). With this change those would also display "DR Congo" and, worse, the military templates would use it to construct the link, leading to redlinks like DR Congo Army. SiBr4 (talk) 17:35, 3 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

OK SiBr4, so it's necessary to edit link- & name aliases. Here's the code:

| link alias-football = DR Congo {{{mw|}}} national {{{age|}}} football team
| name alias-football = DR Congo
| link alias-basketball = DR Congo {{{mw|}}} national {{{age|}}} basketball team
| name alias-basketball = DR Congo
| link alias-volleyball = DR Congo {{{mw|}}} national volleyball team
| name alias-volleyball = DR Congo
| link alias-handball = DR Congo {{{mw|}}} national handball team
| name alias-handball = DR Congo
| link alias-rugby union = DR Congo {{{mw|}}} national rugby union team
| name alias-rugby union = DR Congo

Maiō T. (talk) 22:29, 3 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Done. The volleyball link is broken (  DR Congo), though it appears it was already, and I can't find an existing page for the DRC volleyball team. SiBr4 (talk) 08:23, 4 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
  Fixed. Maiō T. (talk) 14:23, 4 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Template-protected edit request on 10 August 2017 edit

Please add {{{age|}}} parameter into the handball alias, because wikilinks of DRC national youth handball teams don't work correctly.
{{hby|COD}}  DR Congo
{{hbwy|COD}}  DR Congo
Maiō T. (talk) 17:05, 10 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Here is one example what the other users do – (I've fixed it today: [1]). 15:40, 2 September 2017 (UTC)
It's because the template {{hbwy}} is not compatible with DR Congo country data. Maiō T. (talk) 10:25, 11 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Pinging SiBr4, Maiō T. -- Cabayi (talk) 14:05, 13 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Ah, ok, now I see it, Cabayi. Not even sure why this is even controversial. Don't the Federative Republic of Brazil, the People's Republic of Bangladesh and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia have shortname aliases? Of course they do. The argument that this will impact {{navy}} and {{army}} templates is equally vacuous. Is the People's Republic of China's shortname alias "People's Liberation"? No, it isn't. Yet its navy is called the   People's Liberation Army Navy. Guarapiranga (talk) 20:29, 13 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Unlike your examples of Brazil, Bangladesh and Ethiopia, the article for this country exists at Democratic Republic of the Congo. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Flag Template#Changing the wikilink display text, which states the best results are obtained when the template name matches the article wikilink (as specified by the alias value). And you have seemed to miss the technical implications, the shortname alias parameter is not only used for text that may be displayed, but also for the link which is generated in some flag templates. Changing this to "DR Congo" would break the links in some instances of the template, which clearly should be avoided. S.A. Julio (talk) 22:54, 1 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
It would… if they weren't redirected. But they are. Guarapiranga (talk) 23:08, 1 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Some redirects exist, but not necessarily in all cases of what a flag template may be linking to. The greater issue is {{flagcountry}}, which displays the shortname alias when available. Given the article exists at Democratic Republic of the Congo, there should be consensus before changing how the country name is displayed on the many articles which transclude {{flagcountry}}. S.A. Julio (talk) 23:46, 1 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Mostly all uses of {{flagcountry|COD}} are in lists and tables, precisely where the long form Democratic Republic of the Congo forces a huge column width wheneve word wrapping is not a possibility (e.g. tables with a fixed rank column), also standing out from all other countries listed by their shortname alias. Wherever redirects from ____ in DR Congo____ in Democratic Republic of the Congo don't exist, they can be created, as they should (and indeed the red links are great cue for doing precisely that!). Guarapiranga (talk) 03:32, 2 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Alternatively, I'd be equally happy with DRC's other shortname alias: Congo-Kinshasa. Guarapiranga (talk) 03:34, 2 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Guarapiranga: Could you provide a sandbox version with testcases to compare before and after for templates such as {{navy}}? Sceptre (talk) 16:12, 2 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Sure can, Sceptre. Guarapiranga (talk) 21:55, 2 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
One issue is {{Flag+link}}, where the sortname alias is used to generate the links. This would therefore break the link at Jewish population by country. I'm going to sort through the core flag templates to check for any more issues prior to the change being made. S.A. Julio (talk) 22:58, 2 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
There, sorted, now {{flag+link}} uses the alias for the link and the shortname alias for the display. Guarapiranga (talk) 00:47, 3 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Not done for now: sorry I can't see the consensus for this change yet. Please reactivate when User:S.A. Julio is convinced that this change will not cause any links to break. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:58, 4 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
So you're saying only Julio can reactivate it? That's not what's written here, MSGJ (emphasis mine):

This edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= or |ans= parameter to no to reactivate your request.

Or am I supposed to read his mind? Guarapiranga (talk) 22:39, 4 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Since Template:Country data Republic of the Congo has the shortname alias "Congo", the change seems alright to go ahead with, so now   Done. I went searching through a number of templates and articles to verify the change wouldn't cause any issues. I created a few redirects, but the rest looked adequate to me. Let me know if there are any issues. S.A. Julio (talk) 15:13, 5 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Guarapiranga and S.A. Julio: Thank you for realization of my old idea! (#Template-protected edit request on 3 July 2015) Maiō T. (talk) 21:59, 9 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
