Template talk:Article history/work

First worklist edit

The following is a list of pages with the following criteria:

  • Begins with 'Wikipedia:Featured article candidate'
  • Is either
  • Is not simply a redirect which is neither linked from TP nor transcluded in log
    • (Thus Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/1755 Lisbon earthquake/Archive 1 is excluded because it is a redirect not linked to from anywhere, nor transcluded in a log)
  • Has a title which contains the name of one featured article
    • (Thus 2003 Invasion of Iraq is listed, because "Invasion" is FA)
    • (Thus Sunset blvd is listed because it matches Sun)

Pages which look like archives are probably older FAC attempts for featured articles. These need to be added to the talk page with {{facfailed|pagelink}}, where pagelink excludes the WP:FAC prefix. If the facfailed links are added (where appropriate), the bot will take care of (most of) the rest.

Exceptions, withdrawns, cleared redirects and moves edit

Noting all exceptions and moves here, for re-check:

  • 2003 Invasion of Iraq
  • Architecture of Windows 2000

Second worklist edit

Would this be a suitable place to start a second worklist? Carcharoth 01:06, 6 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, this works. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 13:23, 6 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ready for GimmeBotification edit

  •   Talk:Glass (anon deleted all the templates - found because FFA count was off) (issue)
  •   Talk:Indus Valley Civilization (issue)
Is Wikipedia:Featured articles nominated in 2004 useful for any of these? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 17:06, 10 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Dates taken from User:Feature Historian
Pending mainpage

Done; this should catch up the Today's featured article requests, since most new ones will probably be recent FACs that already have the ArticleHistory template. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 17:00, 16 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Intentionally not supported by ArticleHistory edit

Supported by ArticleHistory edit

Supported by bot, remain in use
Bot puts before ArticleHistory if present
Not supported by bot
Supported by bot, possibly replacing
Replaced, no longer in use

Not supported by bot, obsolete? edit

No transclusions; possibly problematic if used as it autocategorizes to Category:Wikipedia featured article candidates. Can we officially declare this one obsolete & tfd it? Maralia (talk) 03:32, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Possible script bugs edit

Gimmetrow, why won't Dr pda's articlehistory script work on this page? It doesn't even show in my toolbox. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 21:11, 11 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Script worked for me on this article. Maralia (talk) 22:19, 11 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Unarchived FACs in articlehistory edit

Gimmetrow, one of the main reasons I wanted to finish up the {{facfailed}} templates was so that we could eliminate the complicated instructions at {{FAC-instructions}} (re: moving old fac pages) and avoid future malformed noms. Getting through the archives to prep the pages for the facfailed templates is easy; what is slowing me down is dealing with the articles that already have a correctly built {{articlehistory}} template, but include an unarchived previous FAC. These create a problem on future fac submissions, as the {{fac}} template will link to the old fac, and editors rarely move and archive them correctly. Is it possible to have a bot/script go through and locate all of these and archive them? Then getting through the remaining facfaileds will go much faster. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 18:01, 17 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

A bot did much that for the peer reviews. Did you think of asking melon? Gimmetrow 18:08, 17 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I never understood what his bot was doing because it involved all those complicated PR templates; if that's it, and a bot that does this is already created, yes, I could ask him. Would that do the job? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 18:15, 17 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Is this a correct summary of the task?

  1. Identify talk pages that have an {{articlehistory}} and are in Category:Wikipedia featured article candidates (contested), but the Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/articlename are not archived
Note, we don't archive facs that are promoted, only contested.
  2. Move the FAC to the next openN archiveN.
  3. Clear the redirect, adding the article title and a link to previous FAC.
Here's a sample of this step: [1] (It should use the exact phrase and capitalization "previous FAC" for consistency in future scripts. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:21, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
  4. Update What links here on the original FAC to archive
  5. Update the articlehistory on the article talk page.

SandyGeorgia (Talk) 18:19, 17 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Melon did that for PR. Basically went through every PR without an /archiveN, checked if it was a GimmeBot leftover, moved it otherwise, and updated links including ArticleHistory. So most of the coding is done. The key new things are: excluding any pages not the the contested category. (For this, simply going from WP:FA is incorrect since some articles have moved since they were promoted.) And melon didn't reset the PR pages after moves, since they weren't going to use them. See if he wants to do it; although it's still assisted editing, it's a much smaller job than PR. Gimmetrow 18:45, 17 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
OK, but some parts of this are already coded into GimmeBot (like 2 move FAC, 3 cleaar redirect, 4, update links and 5 update articlehistory), so wouldn't he be borrowing code from GimmeBot? (sorry, techno-dummie here). SandyGeorgia (Talk) 00:32, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sure, I'd be happy to help out; it does indeed seem like the key activity (move a page from Wikipedia:Peer reviewFeatured article candidates/Foo to the lowest-numbered archiveN which doesn't already exist; update all incoming links, and do whatever with the redirect page) I've already got programmed and debugged. The only thing I'd have to do is write a new wrapper for selecting the pages to move. It sounds to me like what you want is:
  1. Load a page from Category:Wikipedia featured article candidates (contested)
  2. If the page doesn't have {{articlehistory}}, go back to step 1
  3. If the articlehistory template has |actionNlink= of the form "Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Foo", do the archive job on "Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Foo", otherwise go back to step 1
Is that correct? If so, I could code that without any problems. As people like GuillaumeTell will tell you, I'm rather busy at the moment, and so wikipedia in general, and bot stuff in particular, is being kicked around like a football; but I'll do my best to get it done ASAP. Happymelon 10:11, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Mostly, except it's more complicated. Articles with ArticleHistory will currently only be in the contested category if they have currentstatus=FFAC. So articles which are GAs or delistedGAs will not be in the category. Gimmetrow 15:14, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Happy! I added a sample (above) of the clear redirect step. If you underselect and don't get them all, that's no problem, since we are currently going systematically through the old archives to check everything and complete GimmeBotification of the old facfailed templates. If you don't get the ones that are current GAs, that's no problem; we'll catch them on the manual pass. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:23, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Also, you can find samples of articles that need this work at Template:ArticleHistory/work#To fix. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:26, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
