Template talk:Administrator

There's been some question here about using the copyrighted Wikipedia logo in the template. I think that Image:Admin Puzzle Icon.png would work very well to illustrate what needs to be illustrated, and it's GFDL. Questions, comments, suggestions? WODUP 07:56, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

When I added that image to User:NoSeptember/The NoSeptember Admin Project last year, it was the only page on all of enwiki to use it. Now there are lots. I suggest some of our local artists create a number of other possible images for us to use. A mop in front of a big W, for example, and let people choose which to use. Administrator2 has another possibility, which I'm using at the moment due to the dubious copyright status of this image. --ais523 13:57, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
How about a picture of Wikipetan? >Radiant< 14:15, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
That would be administrator-tan. --ais523 14:21, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
Dumb question, but wouldn't Wikipe-tan be derivative of the puzzle pieces in the logo, and therefore also CopyrightByWikimedia? I'm not too concerned about either, and I'd bet the board doesn't either, but I don't think Wikipe-tan's in a much better copyright position than the globe/mop. Ral315 » 15:47, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
It looks to me that Wikipe-tan is an original image inspired by but not at all copied from the copyrighted Wikipedia logo. WODUP 01:02, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well, the problem is that it uses two nearly exact puzzle pieces from the globe, which would seemingly be enough of the logo to sufficiently determine it to be a derivative work. Ral315 » 02:19, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
 • Shouldn't we discuss the legal issues first before considering replacing the image? - Mtmelendez (Talk|UB|Home) 16:35, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
The image page says that the image is copyrighted, but on Commons, there's a note that says that there's no objection from the Foundation for the image to be used on Wikimedia projects. We don't normally allow images that can only be used on the projects because that doesn't allow reuse, something that's necessary to allow redistribution. WODUP 01:02, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
This image is free: Image:Czech_broom.jpg. >Radiant< 08:39, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
The problem is that we don't accept with-permission-only images, which is effectively the copyright on the Wikipedia logo in this case. --ais523 17:04, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
I think it should be noted that the globe icon is used in many other images as well. While I'm in no way suggesting that that is or is not justification for its use at all, Image:2kip.png and others use the globe, so I think clarification on its use anywhere on Wikipedia should be clarified before this template is changed or deleted. Just my thoughts. Cheers. --MZMcBride 03:54, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Merge? edit

Would anyone mind if I merged Template:Administrator2, Template:Administrator2, and Template:Administrator-tan with this template (Template:Administrator)? It requires a simple switch tag and it would reduce the clutter. Thoughts? Cheers. --MZMcBride 04:33, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Position edit

editprotected

Is it just me, or is the bottom of the mop overlapping the line between the title and the tagline in your browsers, too? It looks to me like this problem could be fixed by changing <div style="position:absolute; z-index:100; right:10px; top:10px;" class="metadata" id="administrator"> to <div style="position:absolute; z-index:100; right:10px; top:5px;" class="metadata" id="administrator">, but I'd like to make sure this isn't a browser quirk before making any change. Editprotected applied to this comment so that another admin will take a look. :) Nihiltres(t.l) 16:43, 11 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Overlapping for me in both IE6 and Firefox 2. (This may be related to the recent anonnotice positioning changes.) --ais523 16:56, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
In that case, I'll tentatively make the change. Nihiltres(t.l) 18:50, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Err, wait, the problem seems to have gone away on its own. I'll leave it be. Nihiltres(t.l) 18:52, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Gadgets and heading position edit

I just reverted a change made by User:Edokter that shifted the logo 45 pixels to the left (from 10px to 55px) due to the fact that it conflicted with the rows of barnstar/DYK/FA/etc. icons that many users have on their userpage. From the edit summary, it seems that the move was done to avoid conflict with the "edit top" gadget, but given that it causes new problems, I was wondering if maybe this test edit might not be an acceptable solution. --jonny-mt 17:11, 30 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Then the edit-top link would move to the left and overlap the barnstars. Can't the barnstar be moved further left? EdokterTalk 19:11, 30 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Could this be dumbed down a little? :) I don't quite get what's going on here. All I know is that my penguin is now overlapping my mop girl. Cheers, faithless (speak) 19:56, 30 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
It should be back to the far right again. EdokterTalk 21:23, 30 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm planning on deploying a new version of Gadget-edittop that can handle userspace "top icons". When that code is deployed, I will remove the "id=featured-star" part of this template. It is out of place here. --TheDJ (talkcontribs) 13:44, 27 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Remove Wikipedia Logo? edit

Mike Godwin himself responded to this thread on ANI regarding using Wikipedia logos in userspace. The userbox template had the image replaced with Image:Admin Puzzle Icon.png (it was a little on the fuzzy side so I recreated a sharper version :) )...so does that mean we should consider removing the Wikipedia logo version from this template?¤~Persian Poet Gal (talk) 01:53, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

See the logo section above. --MZMcBride (talk) 02:02, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've moved the documentation to the /doc page, so anyone can add interwikis and the like. EdokterTalk 21:47, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

What does this template do? edit

I saw this in one admin's talk page and I couldn't actually see what it added to the page, and I'm unable to view what it adds since the page displays the transclusion of multiple image displays instead. I'll try to figure out from reading the source code. Tyciol (talk) 15:52, 21 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

It dispays an icon on the top-right of the page. EdokterTalk 16:41, 21 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

New version edit

editprotected

<div style="position:absolute; z-index:100; right:{10}px; top:{10}px;" class="metadata" id="featured-star">
{{#tag:imagemap|
Image:{{{image|{{#switch:{}
|2 = Goldenwiki.png
|3 = Admin logo.gif
|4 = Admin Puzzle Icon.png
|tan = Wikipe-tan mopping.png
|Admin mop.PNG
}}}}}{{{size|{{#switch:{}
|smaller|2|4 = 20
|3 = 24
|22
}}}}}px
default This user is an administrator.
desc none}}
</div><includeonly>{{#ifeq:{cat}|no||}}</includeonly><noinclude>
documentation</noinclude>

This doesn't change anything visually, but simplifies the code and allows for further customization. I already applied this to the Commons one (the parameters listed there if you want to copy them for the doc). Those will allow for custom sizes and location (as well as the image itself). I made it categorize only user pages, not talk pages or subpages. I figured the manual category override ({cat}) is no longer needed since non-admin shouldn't be using this anyway. Not sure about the "featured-star" id so I left that. Thanks. Rocket000 (talk) 17:58, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

A {cat} parameter allows removing the category entirely, no? --MZMcBride (talk) 19:04, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it does, but I can't think of a situation where this would be needed or a good thing. It will only categorize userpages and not talk pages, user subpages, or anything else. All admins should be in that category and non-admins should not be using this, right? Go ahead and leave it in if you want, it's not a big deal. (The parser function should have been a plain parameter instead, e.g. {} changing it now would require those with '|cat=no' to remove the 'no' or it will show in plain text). Rocket000 (talk) 19:55, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Nevermind, I guess it's optional. :) I just saw your userpage. Rocket000 (talk) 19:58, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, it makes no difference to me personally as I learned years ago to substitute templates for my userpage to avoid people screwing with icon sizes or trying to change images, etc. ; - ) So, I'm pretty indifferent about the issue, really. I'll let another admin implement this change, though. --MZMcBride (talk) 20:01, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Meh, just leave it out. That's not what I came here for. Rocket000 (talk) 20:06, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Updated code. Rocket000 (talk) 20:07, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
  Done. That was rather inefficient code. Though, in my defense, #tag used to not be an option. ; - ) Cheers. --MZMcBride (talk) 03:37, 14 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! :-) Rocket000 (talk) 18:38, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Golden Wiki confusing edit

The Golden Wiki is confusing, when I see it on a user's page I think they've been awarded a Golden Wiki, not that they are an admin. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 02:46, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I am suggesting we remove the golden wiki. Being an administrator is not a reward. -- Magioladitis (talk) 18:12, 28 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Standardization with top icon template edit

I haven't checked, but if I had to guess this might have been created before top icon; either way, is there any objection to standardizing this template using that one? – Luna Santin (talk) 06:05, 21 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think it is a good idea, but then I might be biased :D. Let me first insert some tracking pages so we can see how many people use some of the options. Because

is somewhat different of course. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 11:21, 13 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Trackers for option usage. Use Special:WhatLinksHere. It will take quite a while before the pages become listed. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 19:35, 13 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

So there you go. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 09:26, 15 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Interesting, and thanks. It's especially helpful to know which parameters aren't being used. If there's no objection, I think I'll redirect this template to administrator topicon, dropping both the size parameter and the "crat" option (see new bureaucrat topicon). My own preference is to drop the image switch, as well -- the whole idea is to keep this thing recognizable at a glance, after all -- but I anticipate a little more push-back on that count. – Luna Santin (talk) 22:56, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I think tan is popular enough to keep. The goldenlogo should be removed per "adminship is not a trophy". The puzzle logo is fun, but with 3 users, we might as well use hardcopy custom top icon templates for those 3 users. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 10:39, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Seems like we've waited long enough... I've redirected this template to administrator topicon, which now supports use of the default image, Wikipe-tan image, and a user-selected image; per discussion here, I'm omitting the other options for now, but that can be revised if needed. Other behavior should be nearly identical. – Luna Santin (talk) 23:28, 20 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
