Hook fact checks out to Hasegawa 2003 and is in article and is interesting and (presumably) underdiscussed as a topic. @Riverhugger: The paragraph ending in "Both territories remain part of Russia's Sakhalin Oblast today, although there remains an ongoing dispute over some of the Kurils." needs an inline citation at the end of it.
