Players of color in the NBA edit

Created by Bagumba (talk). Self nom at 18:05, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

  • The length and newness criteria are met but the hook is not borne out by the reference cited in that no date is mentioned. Nor does the article have a lead section and I feel it should not be promoted to the Wikipedia front page until it does. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:46, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
  • As the article talk page has an ongoing discussion on the title and scope of the article, I'm OK with declining this DYK. BTW, the New York Times article does mention the date: "Misaka, 88, was 5 feet 7 inches when he played three games for the Knicks in November 1947. For a long time, he was remembered, if at all, as the first Asian-American player — the first nonwhite player, really — in the N.B.A." The Knicks are the first and only NBA team he played for—perhaps you were asking for a source for the latter fact.—Bagumba (talk) 17:46, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
  • I reaffirm that the source gives the date (also in a caption on that source it says he was the first non-white player, in 1947). It would be great to have an article about him.
  • I re-wrote the first sentence to reflect the source and the hook.
  • Is there a rule that states that there has to be a lead in a new article this size?--Ishtar456 (talk) 00:45, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
Last question moot, as I gave it a lead. --Ishtar456 (talk) 00:54, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
  • I am withdrawing from reviewing, at least for now, and the nom. is going on vaction. The nom suggests that whoever is working on this view the articles talk page.--Ishtar456 (talk) 03:47, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
  • The article looks fine, although it looks like it may be moved. Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:51, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
  • I have added two {{citation needed}} tags to the article. Second, the link for ^ Pomerantz 2005, pp.53, 123 (reference #6) does not work. Third, the structure of the "History" section is somewhat close to the source:

Blacks first appeared in the NBA in 1950. Chuck Cooper was the first black player drafted in the NBA; Nathaniel "Sweetwater" Clifton was the first to sign an NBA contract, and Earl Lloyd was the first to play in the NBA.

    vs.

The season also marked the first appearance of black players in the league. Chuck Cooper became the first black player to be drafted when he was chosen by Boston; Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton became the first to sign an NBA contract when he signed with New York, and Earl Lloyd became the first to play in an NBA regular-season game because the schedule had his Washington team opening one day before the others.

I do not know if this strays too close to the source and would require a rewrite. I've asked Nikkimaria (talk · contribs) to take a look. Cunard (talk) 11:42, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
  • In my opinion this structure is not so close as to require rewriting. I was not able to find an online source with similar wording for the citation-needed sections either. Nikkimaria (talk) 12:15, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
  • Okay, thank you for the feedback. I've stricken that concern. Cunard (talk) 12:29, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
  • I've fixed the link that was broken to the Pomerantz reference. Also, one of the citation neededs was resolved, as a citation that covered multiple sentences was broken off to another paragraph. For the remaining CN, I've left a notice on the talk page of the editor who introduced the text in question.—Bagumba (talk) 18:45, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
  • The length, date and original references all check out fine for me, but I can't get any of the achived versions to work, they all come up "Server not found". I think webcitation.org is currently down, or at least, I can't currently access it. I would be happy to pass the article on the basis of the original references, but I'm concerned about the broken links: if they're not working at your end either, possibly consider removing them and just relying on the originals? Also, I have a slight concern that "The first non-white player was allowed to play in 1947." is not technically backed up by the reference: as far as I can tell, non-white players were allowed to play before 1947, it's simply that none did? Was there actually a rule change in 1947? If there was actually a change in legislation, this should be expanded upon within the article. Harrias talk 19:29, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
  • Reworded "allowed" in the article to address concern. There were no official rules disallowing non-whites that I am aware of. In any event, it's unrelated to the hook. As for webcitation.org, it is working for me now. In the worst case, the original links are also available in the citation. WP:DEADLINK encourages preventing link rot before it happens, so it seems counterproductive to remove it due to a temporary glitch on their server. I hope this is not needed to satisfy DYK.—Bagumba (talk) 22:03, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
  • If they work for you, I'll pass the nom AGF: I can see the original links to reference the claims, but for me the citation links still don't work, which itself is link rot! But as I said, if they're working for you, I'll just put it down to something at my end. Good to go. Harrias talk 23:34, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
