(edit conflict) Pages 4–5 of the source say "1998年刘少奇诞辰100周年时，中方向阿廖沙发出了请他参加纪念活动的邀请函。可这封邀请函却被俄有关部门扣留了。[...]2003年4月，他终于和妻子第一次踏上了回乡之路。" That is, "In 1998, at the time of the 100th anniversary of Liu Shaoqi's birth, China sent an invitation for Alyosha to join the anniversary activities. But this invitation was confiscated by the relevant Russian authorities. [...] In April 2003, he and his wife finally set off to return home for the first time." —Mx. @Lightburst: I think the highlight of the hook is the unexpectedness. I am happy to provide some alternative hooks:
ALT2: that Liu Weining, grandson of the second President of PRC, became involved with Russian military secrecy due to his job and was denied travelling back to China?
