My only question is on the hook word "mature".. Since the population of the Macaroni Penguins was strictly a count of pairs, I believe this means mature. But in case someone wants to know before it's promoted, it would be good to have your explanation here.

Other than that, PhnomPencil, I found this to be a well-done article for the Main Page, something DYK should be proud to have out there. — Maile (talk) 19:06, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, Maile. The ratios used for penguins are Pairs x 2 = Mature, and Mature x 1.5 = Total Individuals (though the latter one should not be overused, as they can have different life spans). We can see full calculations at the Erect Crested Penguin and Snares Penguin Red List pages, among others. I see many instances of "18 million" mature Macaroni Penguins on Google but can't guarantee they're not paraphrased from the Macaroni Featured Article, which uses the same source to arrive at that conclusion. Nothing at Google Scholar with the 18 million statistic.
I can propose the ALT 1: "... that the Galapagos Penguin (pictured) is outnumbered well over ten thousand to one by Macaroni Penguins?", that way our butts are covered.
Oh! Not to be a stickler but I don't think I need WP:DYKSG#D9. For lists only the prose is counted, and this was expanded over 5 times to over 1500 characters yesterday. Doesn't really matter, but this is part of a series of new lists, and it may take a lot longer to write the prose for some of those, meaning they may fall out of WP:DYKSG#D9. I don't think all of them will be submitted, but some, yes, to raise awareness that we actually do know this much about animal populations. Also, if DYK is really short of X-mas hooks, I guess one on "penguins" kind of falls into that. Up to you, though, I didn't think about that until this morning.
