- This picture I believe would be free as I only see the author's name on the side and no copyright symbol. As it was published in 1987, it would squeak by Template:PD-US-1989. I'm leaving it here for now for a second opinion before uploading. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 17:46, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

The article currently weighs in at 1,548 characters, just barely over the minimum of 1,500 required for eligibility. I really think this could stand to be beefed up before it receives a Main Page appearance, as it is quite stubby at the moment. Rives' career as a player for a major-conference college football team should provide at least some potential material to expand the article. There aren't even any stats for his career, which is something I'd expect to see. As for the blurb, the formatting needs work; it should start "... that Chip Rives", as "Do you know" is implied by the section title on the Main Page. I also find it slightly misleading in that Rives wasn't the sole recipient of the award in 1987; Sports Illustrated gave it to a group of athletes involved in charitable work (this isn't clear in the article either). In addition, I doubt the photo licensing would hold up to scrutiny. While I'm having trouble pulling up the full Sports Illustrated magazine on their website as I review this, I'd be stunned if they published an issue without a copyright notice. That image probably needs to be deleted, not put on the Main Page. Overall, there's quite a bit of work still needed for this to be suitable for DYK. Giants2008 (Talk) 01:24, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
- To be fair, I did not make this article for a nomination on DYK. I only made this article because it was a redlink. @RekishiEJ: nominated it. The hook could be changed to "a recipient of" to prevent confusion as in the article I stated he was co-named. In terms of the content, I've added that the 1987 award was for charity work and have added his college football career. As for the image, there is only an author "C.W. Pack Sports" and no copyright notice from this link on SI. There are also no copyrighted images named Chip Rives from 1987 to 1992 nor registered under C.W. Pack Sports. - For a magazine like Sports Illustrated, there would have to be no copyright notice in the entire work, not just in the particular article where the photo appeared. Try looking in the whole magazine for a notice; the most recent issue I received (as a subscriber) had a notice toward the back in small print. I wouldn't know where the notices would have been placed in 1987, but as I said earlier I'd be surprised if there wasn't one in that issue. Giants2008 (Talk) 18:16, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Giants2008: The only copyright notices I am seeing are for the magazine itself on page 6. However, the only copyright notice for images is the back cover cigarette ad. Another image for Rives on page 31 has no author, and no copyright symbol at all. Since this is misleading (author but no copyright next to the individual images, yet a copyright notice), I focused on the individual page first while making the article before (only now) looking at the whole magazine for any notices. Now that the photo issue has been settled, I can finish reviewing this article. It has been increased to 1,996 characters, so it isn't scraping over the 1,500-word minimum anymore. The hook formatting has been cleaned up and now complies with the guidelines, and the hook's content has been improved and is adequately supported by reference 12. Spot-checks of refs 1, 2, 8, and 11 show no close paraphrasing or verifiability concerns. This is now good to go. Giants2008 (Talk) 15:28, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
