Charles Phillips (archaeologist) edit

Source: Phillips 1987, p. 5: "We worked at picking up potatoes and camped amongst a large, straggling clump of trees, in which stood a group of sizeable round barrows. But our camp did not last long, for all the boys except myself and one called Simmonds caught a widely prevailing kind of summer diarrhoea which was afflicting the troops present in their thousands on the Plain. Apart from making the acquaintance of Stonehenge and noting the numerous burial mounds clustered within view of that numinous spot, I also had an important first experience of the nature of chalk, important because so much of my work in later years was to be done in chalk country. Owing to the nature of their affliction we had to have a number of latrine pits ready for the convenience of our sufferers, but, apart from an Army cook, Simmonds and I were the only people in our party left on their feet. For several days we had to dig one pit after another and I soon got to know all about digging chalk."

  • Hi, I came by to promote this, but the article does not look complete. His whole career section is missing. Yoninah (talk) 16:07, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
  • @Usernameunique: Besides the point made by Yoninah, I feel the hook gives a false impression. What about
  • To follow on from the above, the article has two stub templates and the talk page considers this a stub, which it effectively is with no information except his education, a comparatively unimportant part of the life of such a scholar. As a templated stub, this should not have been approved. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:14, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
  • The talk page hasn't been updated since 2012, but you're right, I'll add the Sutton Hoo information shortly. --Usernameunique (talk) 16:21, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
  • Yoninah and BlueMoonset, added a paragraph on Sutton Hoo—can add more if needed, but don't want to end up repeating too much from the actual article on the subject. Cwmhiraeth, that's fine by me. Another alternative would be to remove "his" from "his schooldays" in ALT0, which makes it seem a bit less like his full-time schoolboy vocation was digging cesspits. --Usernameunique (talk) 06:17, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
  • I would like to point out that the image supplied for this nomination is not in the article itself and is therefore not eligible to be run with this nomination. I'll let Yoninah decide whether the article is sufficiently complete now for DYK. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:16, 11 March 2018 (UTC)
  • Changed it to the version that's in the article (actual helmet). --Usernameunique (talk) 21:29, 11 March 2018 (UTC)
  • Thank you for bringing this up to speed, Usernameunique. Here is a followup review: 5x expansion verified. New enough, long enough, neutrally written, well referenced, no close paraphrasing seen in online sources. The page creator has also summarized information from the Sutton Hoo helmet article without copying. I added a snippet view URL for the hook fact, so the hook is verified and cited inline. I think ALT1 is the best choice, as it is humorously worded. QPQ done. Image in article is freely licensed, but I don't think it's necessary to use here. ALT1 good to go.
