Template:Cite JIPA/doc

CUP is changing their release policy. They now release Illustrations based on either the online or the print date; this template has not yet been adjusted to reflect that. If they confirm that they will release another year every New Year, then this template should be automated to reflect that; currently the date is hard-coded and will need to be manually updated.

Usage

This template is intended for citations from the Journal of the International Phonetic Association, specifically for Illustrations of the IPA with links to their associated online sound files. Nearly all Illustrations (apart from those in the IPA Handbook) have free sound files online, at the link provided by the DOI parameter. The Illustrations themselves become freely accessible a few years after their print publication dates, through an agreement between JIPA and CUP. As of 2022, all illustrations published prior to 2021 are freely available. Illustrations from 2021 will become freely available on New Year's day, 2023. This template will automatically show that access is free if the date is entered, but the transition date will need to be changed in the coding as CUP updates their releases.

For the date, you must decide whether your citation date is for a print publication or an online publication. If there is a volume and issue number, or if the first page number is anything other than 1, then you have the citation of the print publication. If the pages start at 1, then you have the citation of the pre-print online publication. CUP will keep the online article behind a paywall for a few years after it appears in print, and there is a backlog for getting online articles into print.

To cite JIPA articles other than Illustrations of the IPA, it may be preferable to use the regular {{cite journal}} template.

For print publications, the likely parameters are:

Full list of parameters:

Parameter	Notes
author/authors	Singular/plural makes no difference.
title	(This is frequently just the name of the language.)
onlinedate/onlineyear	Date of online publication; ignored if printdate is used. Only the year will display, assuming a recognized date format.
printdate/printyear	Date of publication in a print issue of JIPA; free access through the DOI link is calculated from this date.
journal	Optional. Manual override of default Journal of the International Phonetic Association.
department	Optional. Manual override of default "Illustrations of the IPA."
volume	(only available for print publication)
issue	(only available for print publication)
page/pages	(note: online publications that have yet to appear in print all start at page 1)
soundfiles	Optional. Add soundfiles=no if online sound files are not available at the DOI link.
doi	This links to the online publication at CUP, which is the reason for this template.
doi-access	Optional. Manual override of DOI access with the key word "free" to show free access, or "no" to override a display of free access. If this parameter is empty, free access will be calculated as 3 years from printdate.
