Since the dates given in the Annals of Tigernach do not necessarily correspond with Anno Domini dating in this period, they are often cited as "s.a. 749" (from the Latin sub anno, "under the year") rather than "A.D. 749". An alternative method uses the year and the section in which the cited entry appears, so that the second entry under the year 749 would be cited as "749.2".
