Telangana Praja Samithi
|Telangana Praja Samithi|
TPS was founded in 1969. The founding president of the party was Madan Mohan. The main leader of the party was the firebrand former Congress leader Marri Chenna Reddy, who was made the Chief Minister for giving up the struggle for statehood.
TPS was the product of the violent agitations for the Telangana state at the time. On April 6, 1969 TPS led a massive rally in Hyderabad. Police opened fire at the rally, and at least 369 person (mainly young students) were killed.
In the 1971 Lok Sabha elections, TPS won 10 out of 11 seats in Telangana. However, in September 1971 TPS merged with Congress, and the Telangana agitations temporarily disappeared and Chenna Reddy was made the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.
Later, another party with the same name has appeared.
