All TV news broadcasts went on strike in protest at the Special Branch raid on the BBC edit

All TV news broadcasts in the UK went on strike for 1 day in protest at the police raid on the BBC - all scheduled news broadcasts had alternative non-news programming. ITN joined in with the strike. (Sky News did not exist at the time and CNN was not an official broadcaster in the UK yet either).

There's a lot of overlap between these two articles, and in particular a satellite project that was never realised is unlikely to sustain it's own article- what is probably more notable is this article, which deals with the outfall from that. Sort of oppose. What is really needed is a page on the actual Secret Society series, with the controversy over Zircon and Cabinet included in it. The satellite itself should have a separate page. Nick Cooper (talk) 13:40, 14 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered.

Article currently contains this erroneous sentence:

"In early February Strathclyde Police conducted a raid of BBC Scotland's premises in Glasgow which lasted for 28 hours on 24 January 1987."

The raid on BBC Scotland's premises in fact took place on 31 January 1987.

My father, John McCormick, worked for BBC Scotland at this time, and was closely involved with the Zircon affair; he confirms that the raid was 31st rather than 24th January. He has been contacted by the BBC to contribute to their series of films on the issue due to his close involvement.

This date is particularly notable for him as it is his daughter's birthday; he was called away from the birthday party to deal with the police raid.

Stephen, I've done as you requested. The cites given for that statement in fact imply the 31 Jan, so looks like it was a mistake when edited in. The second cite says 2 days after 29jan, first cite says raid lasted 28 hours but gives no date for the raid. Sorry about that, and thanks for the notification.
