Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on October 23, 2009.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that long distance runner Zersenay Tadese was the first person from Eritrea to win an Olympic medal in any sport?

20 km WR edit

The text says he broke Gebrselassie's WR, but the succession box suggests WR belonged to Wanjiru. GregorB (talk) 21:51, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

It's one of those murky successions... Wanjiru did indeed beat Haile's record in 2007 but his mark was not "properly" timed. Two other runners (Deriba Merga and Patrick Makau) bested Haile's mark in 2009 at the Ras-Al Khaimah half marathon. A quick search of the IAAF website seems to suggest that neither of these two marks were ratified either, thus the implication of the sourcing regarding Zersenay's time beating Haile's world record. Adding further confusion to the matter, the ARRS apparently rejects every single one of those marks and has Zersenay's 2006 mark as the best.
In this article, I think following the source and leaving out Wanjiru et al for clarity would be the best–and least confusing–option. This information should certainly go on the prospective 20 kilometres (road running) article, however. SFB 15:16, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

If Wanjiru's time didn't count, then why would they put his time on their own 20 Kilometres All Time list? Merga and Makau's times had to be ratified because their names are on the list also. Maybe IAAF decided Wanjiru's time was valid? The date on that list is the most up-to-date and supercedes those articles.Philipmj24 (talk) 17:06, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

The procedure for the ratification of a world record is not the same as that for the acceptance of marks for statistical purposes. A similar situation can be seen with John Regis's best of 19.87 in the 200 m – which makes him the highest Brit on the all time lists, but that mark is not the British record (which is in fact another run of his at 19.94). Given the details in the second article I linked in my previous post ("the lack of a manual timer being present, a requirement for full world record status"), it is seemingly clear that Wanjiru's mark will never become a ratifiable one.
Basically, more technical information is required if a performance claims to be a world record one (as opposed to the second or third fastest ever etc). This situation exists to ensure that the world record is not tainted by disputes of illegitimacy, while allowing for a looser situation for usual, lesser times to be easily recorded and compiled for statistical purposes.
On a related note, I often find it is very difficult to include such useful information as this in articles, as there appears to be few citable articles which discuss things like this in-depth... a situation which remains probably the only problem with WP:V. SFB 22:14, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
