Reflex of MK /ʌ/

The article says:

Unlike in Seoul Korean, where the Middle Korean vowel /ʌ/ closed to /a/ in the first syllable of a word, Yukjin fronted /ʌ/ to /o/.

Can "closed" and "fronted" really be right here? Also, Lee and Ramsey The Korean Language, pp319–320, only speak of the development to /o/ adjacent to a labial consonant, though they don't show examples of other environments. (They also mention that this development is also found in south Jeolla and south Gyeongsang.) Kanguole 16:25, 7 August 2020 (UTC)

Kwak 2018 is only speaks of the rounding of /ʌ/ to /o/ in certain cases where Seoul shifted them to /a/ without making any stipulations, which is why I assumed the statement in question, but on a second note all his examples are indeed in cases following labial consonants. And given that Middle Korean honah has the Yukjin reflex hannay or equivalent, I think it's safe to assume that o > a in all other environments, as with the other mainland varieties.

Research in North Korea

Just want to check on this sentence: Research on speakers currently residing in the North Korean homeland is rare, and conducted primarily by Chinese researchers of Korean ethnicity. attributed to Kim 2013, which I don't have access to. Have even Chinese researchers had access to North Korea? The Chinese research I'm aware of (e.g. Zhao & Xuan 1986, Piao 2019) has been done in Korean-speaking parts of China. @Kanguole: Kim 2003 cites 黄大华 Hwang Daehwa/Huang Dahua and 全学锡 Chŏn Haksŏk/Quan Xuexi as examples of Chinese scholars who have done some work in North Korea. Huang actually got his PhD from Kim Il Sung University.--Karaeng Matoaya (talk) 12:52, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
