"Pre-Columbian" edit

I'm removing the word pre-Columbian since the Zapotec civilization still is very much alive in the surrounding towns. Sowelilitokiemu (talk) 17:46, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's true that Zapotec cultures and languages persist into the present day, however I would say that "pre-Columbian" is an entirely appropriate description for this archaeological site, which was not occupied in the post-conquest era. Also, "Zapotec civilization" has in this context a specific archaeological/historical meaning (referring to a reconstructed collection of political and cultural entities). There is a difference, even a discontinuity, between this historical system and present-day Zapotec communities- just like one would say Ancient Greek or Roman cultures and political systems are no more, although there are clearly modern-day Greeks and Romans. --cjllw ʘ TALK 00:25, 7 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
