Doesn't make sense to me edit

This line from the article doesn't make sense to me.

"As a fabless semiconductor company, Rambus only produces a design; it must make deals with memory manufacturers to produce XDR2 DRAM chips, and there has been a notable lack of interest in doing so."

Why does Rambus need to generate interest in it's designs? Can't it just go to a fab and pay them manufacture their design? I don't have much knowledge specific to RAM manufacturing, so maybe this is common practice in that industry, but it sounds like they just set specifications and didn't actually produce any designs. Or maybe its the mention that it's a fabless semiconductor company that's throwing me off. Can someone clear this up? --216.31.211.11 (talk) 00:56, 14 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

What this article doesn't say but assume you know is the DRAM manufacturing process is highly optimized (for many capacitors, but slow transistors; google for instance "dram stacked capacitor"). The only fabs capable of producing DRAM well are... the DRAM manufacturers; the big five used to be Elpida (now bankrupt), Hynix, Infineon, Micron, and Samsung. But they and Rambus have been suing the crap out of each other over patents, monopolies, price fixing, etc (google "FTC Rambus" [] and "Hynix Rambus" [1]). So anyone wanting to design something with XDR2 can expect a crapload of trouble at manufacturing time at probably (highly) uncompetitive prices next to JEDEC-endorsed products that the DRAM fabs favor. Rambus has also been busy suing other chip makers for memory controller patents [2] including LSI, STMicroelectronics, Nvidia, Broadcom, and Freescale. So those guys probably aren't very eager to design their chip(sets) for Rambus. 79.119.87.229 (talk) 04:56, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
