WTF? This should be merged with AmigaOS

Workbench is really just the desktop of AmigaOS, does it really need a separate section? Maybe even it is less than this. Since AmigaOS 3.5, they stopped calling it workbench. It's really silly. Really.

And what happened to all the info about AmigaOS 4. This is the current release but there is hardly any info here, or at AmigaOS or at Amiga. Strange?? 59.167.243.34 (talk) 00:30, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

The desktop was still called Workbench in AmigaOS 3.9 (and I presume 3.5) - you can see in the screenshot. There seems to be enough information here for its own article. Mdwh (talk) 02:00, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

You are right. I got response from OS4 developers: "The intuition window compositing feature uses Composite() function from graphics.library (not Cairo). Incidentally this function is also used by the OS4.1upd2 Cairo implementation."Pavlor (talk) 20:30, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

Do "Workbench 5 by Commodore USA" belong in this article?

I believe "Workbench 5 by Commodore USA" has nothing to do in this article which is about the "Workbench" in AmigaOS, except that it shares the same name. Workbench 5 by Commodore USA belong to its own article, if any. Or what do you think, should it be included in this article?

The GUI frontend vs the file manager

I think I'd assumed that Workbench is the GUI frontend of AmigaOS, rather than the file manager. So under more recent versions, Workbench is just the file manager, equivalent to Explorer (Windows) and Finder (macOS)? And the overall GUI frontend is called Intuition? Furthermore, is it accurate to say that the metaphor of a workbench is an aspect of the file manager, as opposed to of the GUI frontend (or at least the terminology conventions thereof) as a whole?

Furthermore, I'm a little confused about this statement or at least its relevance: "similarly, 'System' was the name given to Mac OS up until version 7.6". Did "System" in Mac OS 8 mean what is now called Finder? — Smjg (talk) 12:33, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

Tagging this "similarly" comment for clarification for now. If "System" does indeed mean the file manager in Mac OS 8, I would agree it's similar. Moreover, when did the file manager stop being called System? If there isn't any such similarity or any other that anybody can explain, the comment isn't really relevant at all, so I would suggest removing it. — Smjg (talk) 11:42, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

It's an incorrect statement outright. The file manager in the classic Mac OS was always called Finder, as it remains in the modern Unix-based macOS (nee OS X).

What the sentence is trying to do is draw the analogy between the way the classic Mac OS was originally called simply "System" and was then renamed to "Mac OS" while this operating system was originally called "Workbench" and was renamed to "Amiga OS". But it's awkwardly phrased, confusing two separate things (because the Workbench name was, somewhat confusingly, made the name of just the file manager), and completely irrelevant (what happened in Apple land has no bearing on AmigaOS).
