Name of this article edit

would it be better to name this article "Wood End, North Warwickshire"? as Atherstone is more than 5 miles away and the village is technically closer to the centre of Tamworth than Atherstone MARK BEGG (talk) 15:00, 30 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

What about Wood End, Warwickshire (near Coventry) which should also be considered in this renaming as it is not currently named to the usual convention. Keith D (talk) 23:06, 7 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wood End, AtherstoneWood End, Kingsbury, Warwickshire – This is currently disambiguated to post town, which should never be done according to WP:NCGN#United Kingdom. There's another Wood End in North Warwickshire, so the district isn't sufficient, but the civil parish (Kingsbury, Warwickshire) is. Peter James (talk) 19:11, 19 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wood End, Kingsbury, WarwickshireWood End, Atherstone – Although Wikipedia does correctly state not to use postal towns Wood End is widely known as Wood End, Atherstone or Wood End (Atherstone) by locals and in the local press so I think it would be best to follow on with that, examples. • WP:UKPLACE is unusually clear in saying "Disambiguation should never be to post town, former postal county or postcode district." It stands to reason, though, that commonsense exceptions could be made, especially to accommodate the WP:COMMONNAME of a place. Perhaps the language at UK place needs to be softened? --BDD (talk) 17:34, 26 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
BDD, although it says it should never use it, the current title already use one: Kingsbury --Rushton2010 (talk) 02:59, 28 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Neutral, verging on oppose - There are two Wood Ends very near to each other - this one and Wood End near Fillongley. Both are very near to Atherstone (5.2miles vs. 7.5miles according to google), both are in the North Warwickshire District, and both have Coventry postcodes.
That one uses "Wood End, Fillongley", as it is within Fillongley Parish. This Wood End is within Kingsbury Parish, so there would be an argument for keeping the current name for consistency (although I would strongly support trimming it down to Wood End, Kingsbury, if it were kept). This village is named because it is at the end of Kingsbury Wood; so there is very much a connection to Kingsbury both geographically and administratively.
As for the Atherstone: it is the postal town, and Atherstone is arguably better known than Kingsbury (?) The nominator does suggest some official sources that use Atherstone to differentiate - but, that could be because it is the postal town, rather than because it is the common name.
Against Atherstone would be the fact that Wood End is closer to Kingsbury, and is in fact closer to the Tamworth Conurbation than to Atherstone - so Tamworth (which is in Staffordshire) could be argued to be closest town anyway.
Overall I'm quite neutral - there is no clear, obvious article title to use. But I would veer tentatively towards the side of keeping the existing title for consistency with, and to avoid confusion from the other nearby Wood End.
HOWEVER, if the existing title is kept, please trim it down to just Wood End, Kingsbury.

I'd based the earlier move on WP:NCGN#Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#England, and partly because of the "name of this article" section above. Compass direction would be a bad idea when there's already one in the district name, ward would result in either "Wood End, Hurley and Wood End" or "Wood End, Kingsbury" and the parish is also Kingsbury. I wasn't sure about disambiguation but I'd seen Woodend, Ulpha, Cumbria, Woodend, Egremont, Cumbria, Brackenthwaite, Buttermere Parish, Cumbria and Brackenthwaite, Westward Parish, Cumbria so assumed that it would be correct despite being not being mentioned in the guideline; other situations (not relevant here) such as an neighbourhood of a large non-unitary town are not either). Atherstone is only the postal town and former (1964-1974) administrative district. Peter James (talk) 23:38, 4 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
