I have read that the Concourse was designed as a streetcar tunnel, but never used for that purpose. Does anyone know of any sources to that effect? Wlindley (talk) 01:32, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I had read this too... The Winter Street Concourse is literally on top of the Red Line right of way... The Concourse also continues on the opposite side of the Orange line tracks (the Oak Grove side) for another block in the southeastern direction. Below what turns into Summer Street. However the other side leads you *outside* of the fare gates. If you follow it all the way down there is a second fare gate and second entrance to the Downtown Crossing Red Line station below. The annoying thing is, in order to get from the northwestern half of the Concourse to the southeastern half you have to go downstairs (towards the Red Line's Downtown crossing platform) and then back upstairs again toward the Orange Line to reach the other half of the Concourse. The Southeastern half (below Summer Street( is like a mini-mall with the entrances for the Filene's Basement and Macy's buildings. Then you have a shoe repair place, an office for the T police, the Customer Service window, and basement entrance to an above ground mall (which I can't remember the name of... I could swear there was a Dunkin' Donuts down there too??? but I can't remember clearly. I might be thinking of the Park Street Station near the platform for Leechmere?
