Why is this redirected to an article about Dr. Who? Winner Takes All is the name of a 70s quiz show in Britain that was revived in the late nineties by Challenge and hosted by Bobby Davro (90s). The page on Daphne Fowler links to this redirect. ----Piplicus^(t/c) 14:12, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Winner takes all

To me this refers to areas of life or business where few are succesful out of the many who try. For example, many people aspire to be actors, only a very small number become stars, while the bulk are often unemployed with below average incomes I think. Or in business, where several firms tender for a project, only one succeeds. It is also related to social inequality. I was disapointed that there is not an article here along these lines, unless its under the less usual wording winners take all. Another example is managers working very long hours because they hope to be eventually promoted to the top of the organisation. I understand from a book I once read about this (do not remember title or author), that most managers in these organisations are made redundant in mid-career, because a) younger managers are cheaper and b) due to the pyramid-shaped hierarchy of most organisations, there is only room for one or two at the top so that the bigger numbers at lower levels inevitably leads to disapointment. This was what happened to a relative of mine. The managers are tacitly encouraged to compete with each other for the senior posts, most are doomed not to get them, the book said. In general this may be an example of positive feedback, where someone initially has a small edge over others (probably just due to a chance fluctuation) which grows into a large edge over others.
