The initial text from 2008 is very close to the text in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. The explanation is this: the old DNB text at s:Dictionary of National Biography, 1912 supplement/Caine, William Sproston refers to a memoir in the Times by John Newton in 1903. It copies it closely, presumably, which is typical of the DNB second supplement. The ODNB copies the DNB quite closely, also typical of some of its articles.

So at least there is no issue with the article being copyvio of the ODNB. Matters could be clarified by using the DNB text as reference. Also, would be a good idea to work over the text anyway. Charles Matthews (talk) 09:44, 20 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
