Preferment edit

What is a "preferment"? We have a redirect for this that points to Clergy, but gives no details. -- RoySmith (talk) 13:37, 5 November 2018 (UTC)}}: A (prior) claim. Wiktionary has an entry that explains it. preferment Vexations (talk) 14:30, 5 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm. Thanks for the link, but I'm afraid that doesn't explain it very well. So, we've got, He owed all his prior claims to Richard II. What does that mean? Prior claims to what? I'm guessing this is all very obvious to somebody familiar with the whole British peerage system, but it's totally mysterious to me. This needs some kind of explanation in the article. -- RoySmith (talk) 15:10, 5 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
