Large ramped structure to east of station yard

What is the huge brick and concrete ramp structure to the east of the station?

It's clearly been part of the railway station but it's very difficult to see what it might have been. Matthewn5 (talk) 08:23, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

@Matthewn5: Do you mean the one on the extreme right of this picture? It's the southbound platform; the northbound platform is in the centre, adjacent to the buildings. --Redrose64 (talk) 09:48, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

@Redrose64: No, it's a large structure consisting of a ramped embankment and then a series of huge brick buttresses linked to a back wall. You can see it on this aerial view: [[1]] It looks like a coal drop - or something similar, used to drop bulky goods out of the bottom of a wagon. Matthewn5 (talk) 16:14, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

Yes, looking at old OS maps, it looks very much like a coal drop. The North Eastern Railway provided a lot of these, together with appropriate hopper mineral wagons. --Redrose64 (talk) 16:22, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
