Merger Proposal

I propose that we merge this article with the National Capital Area article. The two are, for all practical purposes, identical. Thomasmallen 16:48, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

The existing political subdivision map is unreadable even when expanded. This page needs a better map.

Magnet term

The given source uses "magnet" only in conjunction with secondary metropolitan areas such as Greensboro. The point of the source is that metropolitan areas, rather than rural areas, are getting the Hispanics and Asians (nothing new about that). A factual statement for this topic would comment that Washington, as a metropolitan area, shares this characteristic with other (larger...) metropolitan areas. No source is given for the overview, the statements that it is a "magnet" for migration, etc., and appears to be purely POV, combined with selective presentation of statistics. Tedickey (talk) 00:43, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

Economy

Yes, the Washington Metropolitan Area ranks high in the number of high-tech jobs, but I have read some sources stating that the New York Metropolitan Area is #1 for number of high-tech jobs in the US. Mathpianist93 (talk) 22:40, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Well, there are sources and there are reliable sources. Promotional (support the advertisers who paid the salary of the columnist) articles such as one reads in the business section of a local newspaper are less reliable than those based on reports by (presumably) neutral Federal agencies. Page Move?

Hi. I noticed that this page has been moved from Washington metropolitan area, but no reason was provided. The term "Washington Metropolitan Area" is very common and unambiguous. Washington, D.C. metropolitan area → Washington Metropolitan Area – This page was moved here without any discussion. I believe "Washington Metropolitan Area" is the WP:COMMON term for the area (as evidenced by the redirect) and is unambiguous as "metropolitan areas" refer only to cities, not larger political units like states. DC?

I know the infobox says 'State', but is it not a bit illogical not to have the District of Columbia included in it? I am going to add it, given that this is the sole exception to the rule. If someone feels the need to add a disclaimer or footnote that DC is not a state I have no objection, though I don't really think it necessary. Cripipper (talk) 00:18, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

As D.C. is not a state, I moved the district flag in front of the city of Washington, just below the area's states. Perhaps that will suffice. —ADavidB 06:31, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Not really, as the issue is not the flag but the fact that the Washington Metropolitan Area is listed without mentioning it covering the District of Columbia.
