Mission Overview section

I started a mission overview section, though some of the information is redundant with that in the introduction section. Does anybody have any opinions on whether we should keep it as is, or should we have a more bare-bones introduction and start putting the information into sections of their own? Good idea. I feel like it would be hard to add much more without putting the information into separate sections. I like your addition too. Were you implying that it would be the bare-bones introduction that you were referring to? If so, I think if you added ....was designed by "Raytheon" to extract.... then it would be good to replace the first paragraph that is currently up. We could transfer the detector information to a section of its own. I prepared some spectral information in my sandbox. "VIIRS's spectral bands can be divided into three subsections: (1) Imaging resolution bands (I1-I5)- Consist of 16 detectors each with a spatial resolution of 750m at nadir; (2) Moderate resolution bands (M1-M16)- Consist of 32 detectors each with a spatial resolution of 375m at nadir; and (3) Day/Night Band (DNB)- ~750m spatial resolution over the length of the scan." I'd like to be more specific about the wavelengths that the bands cover, but I haven't got around to it. Also, the paper that I found the information in only provided the middle wavelength for each band, and not the range. I think the band specifics would be useful to add because it would allow potential data users to quickly see if this instrument covered the wavelengths that they were interested in. It seems like replacing the current first paragraph with the mission overview one would be beneficial. I'd include who designed it, as stated above, and also maybe a quick overview of the imagery it creates, which we could then break into subsections further into the article, after the detector information.Arilightsey (talk) 21:36, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

This section only discusses VIIRS on Suomi. There is also a VIIRS on NOAA20, according to other pages. Because I see no other information here, I suppose that they are identical. Mmchile (talk) 17:41, 9 September 2020 (UTC)

Applications section

If you look at other pages that discuss remote sensing techniques, they have history, general description, design and applications as the main section. I think that in VIIRS case, it doesn't have much of a history thus far, and once we discuss the mission overview, it would be useful to describe the different applications. There's some information on the page now that talks about what kind of data is produced, so we could go into more detail regarding how the data is applied and why VIIRS is an importing contributor of remote sensing data. NOAA has some really interesting information on how it's been used for observing clouds, sea surface temperature, ocean color, polar wind, vegetation fraction, aerosol, fire, snow and ice, vegetation. Instrument Specifics section

I decided to add this section to the article because I felt like it needed some specific values that apply to the VIIRS instrument. I also wanted to take some of the instrument specifics that were listed in the introduction and move them down to this section. I did this in an attempt to clean up the introduction a little bit. Also if anyone can think of a better, or more appropriate, title for this "instrument specifics" section please edit it in!
