Very confusing

The City of Londonderry

The City of Londonderry is one of two county boroughs in Northern Ireland that exist alongside the six counties, the other being Belfast. Since 1973 it has had no administrative significance, although it still has a Lord Lieutenant. It should not be confused with the larger City of Londonderry that was created in 1973 in conjunction with the 26 district council system. This latter City of Londonderry changed its name Derry in 1984. The car registration prefix "UI" pertains to the City of Londonderry as in the original county system. It never changed its name to Derry like the post-1973 district council did. Even though the six counties and two county boroughs no longer operate as administrative counties and hence no longer allocate the car registration prefixes, Swansea in Wales still issues the prefixes based on the boundaries, as per the Lord Lieutenants. 2A00:23C2:4B02:C01:14D1:BED2:42B2:2261 (talk) 13:28, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

Inaccurate or missing sources for national identifier

The sources relating to the national identifier, such as the code for Northern Ireland being "UK", the images of the UK banner without the Union Flag and the claim that flags aren't allowed on NI plates are either missing or inaccurate, i.e. the citations don't actually prove the claim being made. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.6.147.114 (talk) 15:45, 21 June 2022 (UTC)

I’m not sure that the suggestion that plates in Fermanagh (and elsewhere) will follow a new format once assigned codes are exhausted is valid. There are newspaper articles that state this, but evidence from places like Tyrone and Derry city that have exhausted all codes is that they just continue with the existing format but use a new 2 letter code. Agreed. It is apparent that new county codes will just be generated when the current sequences all expire over the next few years. This should probably be changed. Based on the fact that Derry's county code went from UI to VI, it may likely be that they will just increment whichever letter is not the I or Z. So for example, Ballymena is currently using RZ as the county code (current issue is VRZ). I'd wager that they'll create SZ as the next county code for Ballymena, starting with ASZ (or maybe BSZ if ASZ looks too much like "asses"). 146.199.159.94 (talk) 15:27, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
