"Walenty Smalc" is the name used in the Polish Biographical Dictionary. It is also used in English: [1]. "Valentinus Smalcius" seems to be the latin version of his name, and "Valentin Schmalz" may be German? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 17:53, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
- You should also have searched for the original name:[2]. You see, 150 hits rather than 25. And if you look at the actual hits, after the third all the hits for Smalc are Polish publications. Polish-language sources are not relevant here: what matters is the common name used in English. Smalcius was German, and became somewhat naturalised in Poland towards the end of his life. This does not justify the change of name, nor the changes you made to the article. The choice of a Latin (humanistic) name is quite appropriate for this period.
