Notability edit

I think this article is weird and even unencyclopedic but I don't have the heart to nominate it for deletion. It looks like the author worked hard on it. I just don't see how unusually-shaped vegetables are a legitimately noted occurence, or if there is any scientific or taxonomical distinction between regularly shaped and irregularly shaped vegetables? Has anyone written about unusually shaped vegetables extensively? What makes a regularly-shaped and an irregularly shaped vegetable different? Mind that someone else must provide this information to avoid original research.

Basically, I feel creating this article is alot like creating an article like "Chairs with really skinny legs" or "Words that sound funny". AdamBiswanger1 00:01, 9 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

When there are annual competitions and regular television appearances I think it's quite encyclopaedic. The reasons for the difference between regularly-shaped and unusually-shaped vegetables is detailed in the article, and it is certainly worthy of inclusion. It's just that the boring EB wouldn't include it. violet/riga (t) 11:23, 9 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
This isn't encyclopaedic at all, but I don't care. It should be kept because it's funny. DrHydeous (talk) 00:06, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Unusually-Shaped:Unusually Hyphenated edit

This hyphen use is incorrect. Is it somehow a term of art? I'm alright with this article because it feels like it might go somewhere and get rolled into another article (something alongside cloud-pictures and inkblots), but I think the hyphen should *go*. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.81.116.76 (talk) 18:47, 9 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pictures?! edit

It would be nice if someone could give an example of what these unusual and amusing veggies look like. user:arccorp2 01:34, 10 June 2007 (AEST)

Certainly needs some - I searched for some free ones but couldn't find any. Hopefully we'll have some soon. violet/riga (t) 21:22, 10 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Right there are two eggplant photos there now, but there is certainly plenty of scope for many other pictures. violet/riga (t) 09:59, 14 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Delete edit

How do I nominate this for deletion? 66.92.146.86 (talk) 21:34, 14 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Do we seriously have an article for this?! This is ridiculous! If you have this, you may as well have other dumb stuff like Potato Chips That Look Like Famous People or Potatoes That Look Like Animals. 74.212.38.129 (talk) 09:47, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

It's a cultural phenomenon. Those things you mentioned aren't. I admit that I think the article misses the point a bit. It needs photographs of sexier vegetables, since the great part of the appeal of unusually shaped vegetables is the possibility of seeing a carrot with a penis, or something like a Coco de Mer. I browsed here from Ain Sakhri lovers, musing over the possibility that this prehistoric artifact might be nothing more than an accidentally formed stone equivalent of an unusually shaped vegetable: so I hope that demonstrates to you that it's a notable, meaningful concept. 81.131.9.41 (talk) 18:20, 3 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Re: Things that look like other things, see Pareidolia. ;) –Quiddity (talk) 19:21, 13 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
This artical has no right to exist. There are penis-shaped plants, trees with vagina-shaped holes in the trunc etc. It is hardly a cultural phenomenon that some people giggle when they see "funny" plants and post pictures on the internet.
That aspect of unusually shaped vegetables is indeed silly, but the article covers more than that. Jonathunder (talk) 23:49, 13 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

URL and Title Page edit

The URL is leading to a page titled 'Unusually shaped vegetables' but the URL is 'Square Watermelons'... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.227.1.192 (talk) 13:01, 13 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

That just means you arrived via a WP:Redirect. We have many redirects for pages, to cover alternate spellings, or merged content, or other reasons. :) –Quiddity (talk) 19:19, 13 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Causes edit

Naturally entwined carrots

The Causes section is illustrated with “naturally entwined carrots”, but the text doesn't even try to explain how they could get so entwined in a natural way. Since there is no source for any natural cause, I will remove that adverb. Since it's particularly unhelpful to illustrate the section about causes with an example for which the cause is unknown, but since it's a nice picture anyway, I will also move the picture to the gallery.

The same section also contains the nonsequitur “because the melons must be picked before they’re ripe they are inedible”. Can we delete that? ◄ Sebastian 06:56, 3 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Unusually shaped vegetableUnusually shaped fruit or vegetable – This article covers both fruit and vegetables. QueenofBithynia (talk) 14:54, 13 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • Support, aligns the title to the content, and no reason to keep it to just vegetables.--Cerebral726 (talk) 18:59, 13 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
