Contested deletion edit

This page aims at informing people about an educational/research unit (institute) within the University of Michigan. Is there a way for such a page to exist without being considered "promotional"?

Page content has been edited.

University of Michigan Institute for Social ResearchInstitute for Social Research (University of Michigan) – Unlike, say, "College of Engineering", which is a general name that will nearly always need qualification unless the context is obvious, "Institute for Social Research" is a specific name, shared with a few other institutions around the world, but not a generic term for a department of a university. It is also cited as its own entity, distinct from the university itself. Looking at Google Scholar, the institute is cited more than twice as often (20,500 times) as Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan as it is (8490 times) as University of Michigan Institute for Social Research, and even in the latter case, it is more often cited as University of Michigan: Institute for Social Research, making clear that it has its own distinct identity. I believe the proposed name is more in line with common usage. Sarcasmboy (talk) 06:10, 13 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose, for two reasons. The first is that the current page title is the most recognizable to readers. It explains which generically sounding Institute for Social Research we are referring to. The average reader doesn't know what ISR means or is even if it is the rockstar in it's own field. The second is that besides the web-page branding, the institute's own About Us page refers to itself as the "...the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research (ISR) is among the world’s largest and oldest academic survey research organizations, and a leader in the development and application of social science methods and education." Even the formal location at the bottom of the page refers to itself as the University of Michigan, Institute for Social Research.[1]. It's official facebook page[2], twitter[3] are titled the same. Just because an institute within a corporate body is notable does not mean that we should necessarily deviate from the WP:MOS for page-names. For that matter just because Google Scholar uses a reference system that uses institute coma institution does not mean we should change the page name. If ISR consistently referred to itself as the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan I would support that naming as well. But it doesn't and for that reason WP:COMMONNAME would suggest we use the results of commonly used media not Google Scholar. Randomeditor1000 (talk) 16:11, 15 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Randomeditor1000: Thank you for the detailed response here and on the related proposal Talk:Institute_for_Social_Research#Requested_move_13_October_2018. I do find your argument here persuasive and appreciate you taking the time to lay it out. I think consistent naming across these related article, and the addition of a disambiguation page at Institute for Social Research will help alleviate confusion.
