Proposed changes

Hi, I work at the university and have noticed a number of factual inaccuracies in this article. Yes, I work in the marketing department and, yes, I'm very, vry aware that PRs wading into social media articles can raise critical ethics-and-etiquette issues - so I'm first going to detail my proposed changes here in the backchannel, so I can put them out there for others to pick up...

6. Schools and Departments should be "Faculties and Departments". In August, the university switched from a schools- to a faculties-based academic structure.

This means that all the presently-detailed schools should be removed and replaced by the following faculties, which you can find at the university website's Faculties & Departments page (http://www.glam.ac.uk/facultiesdepts/)...

• Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries (http://cci.glam.ac.uk)
• Faculty of Health, Sport and Science (http://hesas.glam.ac.uk)
• Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (http://hass.glam.ac.uk)
• Faculty of Advanced Technology (http://fat.glam.ac.uk/)
• Glamorgan Business School (http://bus.glam.ac.uk)
• An additional faculty now is the Faculty of Further Education and Collaborative Activites, following the merger of Merthyr Tydfil College with Glamorgan earlier this year (this has now happened so the section "Expansion: 2005 to 2007" can be amended to this effect).

Centre for Lifelong Learning can be retained as it was not a school.

I see someone has already mentioned the Creative school (above) in the Expansion section. This is a new campus due to open in Cardiff in September 2007 to deliver training and education in creative industries subjects. It's kind of a big deal.

This is the first time I have contributed here. Clearly there would be issues over whether I can contribute with an NPOV, but, at the same time, there are some factual inaccuracies here that would be best corrected.

I would rather someone with an NPOV make the changes but, if no-one has made the changes themselves in several days' time, I'll probably do it myself.

House rents in the area

Okay, are house rents in the area relatively expensive or relatively cheap? Special:Contributions/82.11.175.120 seems to think that they are relatively expensive, but Special:Contributions/82.11.166.252 seems to think that they are cheap, having changed 82.11.175.120's contribution. Rents will 'probably'be cheaper because not only is this university located in Wales but it's in the coal mining valleys where most of the housing is terrace housing. I've driven past this university and there is even terrace housing that only has one floor?! :-/ I thought that very odd indeed. Supposed 11:57, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

University ratings

(I'm posting this to all articles on UK universities as so far discussion hasn't really taken off on Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities.)

There needs to be a broader convention about which university rankings to include in articles. Currently it seems most pages are listing primarily those that show the institution at its best (or worst in a few cases). See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities#University ratings. POV?

"The University of Glamorgan is one of the most cutting edge higher educational institutions in the United Kingdom. Several of its courses are among the highest ranked in their field, and the equipment of some departments (most notably the Nursing School) is second to none in the UK."

I'm sure the University is great but the above seems pretty POV really. I mean this isn't a preimier university, it's good but it's not at the cutting edge at all. Surely the best nursing schools are located in Universities that have schools of medicine, I don't think Glamorgan has one.

This University is 74th in this years Times good university guide, that's almost in the lowest quarter of Universities listed there.

It's nice to see the School of Nursing is joint 16th, well played Glamorgan.

The University of Glamorgan is a cutting edge institution, not only is it Wales second University but the fact that it is rated one of the best modern new Universities in the UK, the considerable sums of investment spent on modern up to date equipment and its modern teaching methods support this view.

The Times good University guide is purely the view of the Times newspaper, if you check the league table constructed by other leading newspapers you will note that the ranking of Glamorgan is much higher.

How can you suggest that the best nursing schools are located in Universities that have medical school, training to become a medical practioner and a nurse are two very different vocations. The suggestion is unfounded and unsubstantiated, it would be similar to a suggestion that the best law schools are located in Universities that have arts schools.

It seems this is all made up

Independence from University of Wales

It is the only university in Wales that is completely independent from the federal University of Wales.

• Cardiff University became independent from the University of Wales in 2004 (?) after merging with the Wales College of Medicine. However, it still retains many ties and all 2007 graduates will graduate with a University of Wales, Cardiff - as opposed to a Cardiff University - degree. 14:35, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Unusual tagging

This article is tagged {{globalize/UK}} and {{Inappropriate tone}}. Is the tone really that bad, and since when does an article about a Welsh university need a worldwide viewpoint? Astronaut (talk) 02:40, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

I think it's there for the international students to see before they decide to join this university. About 1/8 of the students are not from the U.K. I think some organizations or individuals outside the UK should have the right to express their views relating to this university.

To me, the overall tone does slightly sound like an advert shifting away from the regular NPOV. May need some cleanup plus negative padding just to balance it a bit. (I didn't put that {{Inappropriate tone}} up). There's no denying that there are too many sources being linked to the university's website, introducing a possible bias on their sources.

I'd say {{Inappropriate tone}} stays.

I think the {{globalize}} tags should be used where a subject does not cover an international point of view when it really should. So, for example, if an article about football referees only mentioned aussie rules football, or an article about the death penalty only covered singaporean law, then that tag would be appropriate. However, if the article is about croissants, TriBeCa, or a Welsh university then perhaps such a tag is unnecessary.

As for the {{Inappropriate tone}} tag, I think this is usually used where the article content is unsuitable for inclusion in an encyclopedia such as: first person narratives, personal anecdotes, slander, libel, overwhelmingly positive/negative content, and so on.

Yes, the article is in need of improvement, but it does have most of the sections present in other UK university articles. Perhaps a short list of notable alumni could be added to the article, and the reference list tidied up so the formatting looked consistant. Otherwise perhaps a trimming of the "reputation" section would make it sound less like an advert/prospectus, and if you know of something bad to say that is constructive (but not a first person narrative, personal anecdote, slander, or libel), and you can cite a verifiable and reliable source. However, this is more an issue of adopting a neutral point of view than an issue of inappropriate tone. Perhaps a {{cleanup}} tag is better choice of tag in this case.
