So far as I can tell, no other university site has a link to a local chapter of the AAUP. Wikipedia is not a link repository and I don't see the local union as being of requisite value to stay. Rkevins82 04:03, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

It is not what is expected of a Wikipedia article, it is also not relevant, nor official. University of Akron owns the IP block, that doesn't condone the activities (running servers, downloading / uploading via P2P) of the students assigned them. --UltraSkuzzi 19:30, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Zippy

Zippy is a girl?!? where is the documentation for this. I can guarantee no students an the University know this. They all refer to Zippy as "he", or "him". I won't change it, but I would like to see just where that info came from.

Plagiarism

Routinely, it seems, someone replaces most of the article content with copy and pasted versions from several University of Akron "history" pages. Picture

Ive uploaded a new pic of the Polymer Tower that is further back to fit the whole tower in including the small compartment on the left that isnt showing all the way on the current upclose, can we come to a consensus on what picture is best to display the tower?--Threeblur0 (talk) 13:34, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Usually when you replace a picture it is because the newer picture is a significantly better picture than the one it replaced. To be honest, while your picture is a good picture, it really isn't better than the one it replaced. That's not to say it's worse either as they are both good pictures. While yours shows that "small compartment" it really isn't all that important in terms of why the picture is there. Think about it: will the reader have a lesser understanding of the University because that compartment isn't showing? Does it make that much of a difference? The problem I have with your picture is the layout. If you could crop out the bottom and the sides so that just the building is showing, it would look a lot better. The previous image Image:Ua goodyear polymer center exterior.jpg is cropped and centered. Honestly, though, I don't see why the picture that was previously there needed replaced. Remember, this article is about the University of Akron, not the polymer building, so it isn't critical that every square inch of the building be visible. What I recommend you do is upload this image (since it is yours) to the Commons and make sure it is placed in the category "University of Akron" then we can place a link on this page to a gallery containing all the images from that category. --JonRidinger (talk) 17:05, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Section on Academics

I recently added a small section on academics. I found it bizarre that a University completely lacked such a section. I believe it should be expanded and should have information integrated into it from the rest of the article, namely the beginning. JEN9841 (talk) 05:02, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Pictures

Would others agree that there needs to be more pictures of the university on the website? I think pictures of important buildings, like the college of arts and sciences, college of business administration, Bulger, exchange residence hall, and the football stadium (when it is finished) should be added to the page. "Third Oldest"

I removed the statement "and is currently the third oldest college in the Ohio University System." First, it's the University System of Ohio. Second, while Akron was founded in 1870, the school was not a state school until 1968. When the first report from the USO came out a short time ago, it was the 1968 date that was listed for the "founded" year for Akron. So while it's one of the oldest universities, it's actually one of the youngest state universities. On top of that it's really not that important, even if it were the oldest. I also removed the statement that said the University was "the public research university for Northern Ohio." That statement is straight from the University's website so is definite POV, plus it's not accurate either as "northern Ohio" has multiple large public research universities (Kent State, Bowling Green, Cleveland State, Toledo, Youngstown State). Remember, this article is supposed to be neutral and third-party, not a promotional site for the University of Akron. --JonRidinger (talk) 02:44, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Research

I do not really have a problem with the content in the research section (though maybe it could use a little slimming down compared to the rest of the article) but I do think it isn't appropriate to have sections for each type of research, where Pulmonary-Infection Treatment, Dry-adhesive nanotechnology, Ceramic Nanofiber Technology, Araneae Evolution, Hurricane Suppression by Supersonic Boom, and the BioInnovation Institute each have there own sections. I think this makes the table of contents look imbalanced and places too much emphasis on research compared to the rest of the article. What do you guys think? JEN9841 (talk) 05:24, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

I think they can be mentioned individually if they are notable or substantial. If not, I would just combine them into a "research" section. Pretty much every university has research, but this article should mention the facets of Akron's research that are unique or at least substantial compared to others. In checking those pics, they are obvious copyright violations as indicated by their source: the University of Akron website. To those who are uploading pictures, remember, pictures posted on the University's website are owned by the University and cannot be placed here without a rationale. Because all of the pictures are of buildings that currently exist, no rationale will be valid though. The weather is great: go out and take some pictures with your own camera and load them to the Commons for use on this article. If you need assistance, please let me know. The pictures currently being used on this page will likely be deleted soon anyway since they were uploaded to the Commons and the Commons only accepts public domain images. Repeated: anything on the University of Akron's website is not public domain and should not be placed here; text or images. Picture size

I thought I posted this yesterday must I must have been mistaken. Someone (an anonymous IP) has been changing my edits that took the pictures sizes from 350 pixels down to 200 pixels. 350 pixels is enormously too large. The IP address, in changing the images sizes from 200 to 350, instructed me to "compare to image sizes on every other university's wiki page." Since this is not possible, take a look at perhaps the most well-trafficked and most tastefully made entry for a university, Harvard University. All of the images on this page are 200 pixels, and I found one that was slightly over 200 pixels. 350 is far too large for these images. Research

I have streamlined the research section by removing a number of subsection headers. The reason for this is that each different instance of research does not require or need its own section. In fact, with all of the headers, it was overcrowding the table of contents and makes the article look unwieldy. Article grade

I don't want to start a battle over how good or not this article is (and nothing personal at all JEN), but as far as I know, the procedure for "grading" an article is that a person who has done extensive edits to the page usually doesn't also evaluate it, due to potential bias. Someone from the Ohio Wikiproject who has preferably not edited this article much at all would need to evaluate it. Personally, I'd probably give this article a "C" rating as it currently stands based on my reading of Wikipedia:WikiProject_Ohio/Assessment#Quality_scale, though I feel like I have possibly made too many edits here to be considered unbiased myself. Would definitely like to see what a total "outsider" to this article thinks. --JonRidinger (talk) 04:33, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Third largest

I removed a claim in the intro that stated "The third largest university in Ohio" with a reference pointing to http://www.uakron.edu/about_ua/. In reading the page I saw no such statement there. Even if I had, it would still not be true as UA ranks behind Ohio State, Cincinnati, and Kent State in enrollment numbers. If anything, it would be the third-largest single-campus by enrollment in Ohio, but not third-largest university in Ohio by enrollment. --JonRidinger (talk) 07:39, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
