I rephrased it. It's explicitly not the same guarantee, as the FDIC does not have the full faith and credit of the US federal government, whereas the US Postal Savings System did, as the Post Office Department was a full (cabinet-level) agency at the time. oknazevad (talk) 04:42, 30 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be little information on this almost-forgotten system. One that seems well-sourced is Mehrsa Baradaran, How the Other Half Banks: Exclusion, Exploitation, and the Threat to Democracy, Chapter 7: "Postal Banking."

After hearing Senator Gildebrand on a talk show, this sounds like a platform that would get the USPS out of financial trouble and start earning their keep.
