Cleanup

This article was a huge mess with a huge chunk of text going over nearly every detail of a period of several years. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. When I read an encyclopedia I expect to find a summary, not a detailed diary. This is not what Wikipedia is meant for. I cut out the text and replaced it with a line about Vietnam operations. That should really suffice. Maybe a small paragraph on notable events *could* be added but things should be kept short. Also the article claims to have used public domain sources but doesn't specify them, perhaps someone can help and providing proper references. --Fogeltje 20:55, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

That was actually a bad move; we have ship article here that are very heavy on details for a period of several years and have recieved praise for that fact. This shortened version is not what Wikipedia is ment for (IMO). Your missing pd source is DANFS, from which 90% or more of the article will have come from. The fact that other ship articles are heavy detailed doesn't mean it should be, in my opinion they should be shortened as well. All the information seems to be directly copied from a free source, there is no harm in linking to that source in the external link section for all the details. But all those details have no place in an encyclopedia which should give a broad overview, the shortened version is exactly what Wikipedia is meant for. If you can directly to the page for the Newport News on DANFS, please add it to the external links. The article will give a broad overview of what the Newport News was and accomplished and those who really want all the details, can visit the DANFS entry directly.--Fogeltje 09:31, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Decommissioned - status and appearance.

Decommissioned in 1975, not scrapped until 1993. I believe she remained in Philadelphia that whole time frame. To my recollection I believe the shipyard at least annually gave here a washdown to avoid a dusty appearance, and kept here moored at a corner where her bow was barely visible outside the main gate to the base. Many people would think she was a battleship first time the ship was seen. I was in Philadelphia last 1986 to 1987 for my ships overhaul Wfoj2 (talk) 12:03, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
