During the 1974 Med cruise, off the coast of Italy, a seaman Fagin disappeared from the ship at sea under mysterious circustances. He was never found.
Ocean Safari '85 edit
During ocean safari '85 I was a member of the ships crew and I remember the incident where we lost that huge brass bell. The damage was caused by a rogue wave that must have been at least 80 feet high. I was manning the helm during my watch rotation and I remember seeing this huge wave off in the distance. I tried to turn the ship to hit it head on and I remember that as it hit I first saw the sky followed by a solid sheet of water which went over the top of the ship. My friend, signalman David Thomas, was above me in the signal bridge shack and told us that the wave went over the shack. Not only did we loose what was stated but we also had one of our weather deck doors bow under the pressure of the wave. We were escorting some coastguard cutters at the time but they had to take refuge by hidding in Iceland to wait out the rest of the storm. --FritzT (talk) 00:58, 26 January 2010 (UTC) Signed----Robert J. Name edit
The Detroit River was named as such by the French. "Detroit" is not a Native American name for that body of water and thus this runs counter to the naming convention stated in the opening that oilers are named after Native American names for rivers. 14 November 2017. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.96.28.53 (talk) 16:29, 14 November 2017 (UTC)
Furthermore, not all USN oilers are named for rivers. All four members of the Sacramento class appear to be named after cities (Sacramento, Seattle, Camden, and Detroit).
