Summer 2008. RimPac exercise off Hawaii or somewhere in the eastern Pacific. Ray to be used as a target vessel during the exercise. Ex crew members usually enjoying knowing what happened to ships they served on. Hopefully someone will notice when the actual sinking occurs and where then provide the info here. Enquiring squids like to know. Carry on. 72.47.13.75 (talk) 23:08, 29 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Do we have a ref that ex-DD-971 was the ship sunk by the ADCAP? ex-Cushing was also set to be sunk during RIMPAC 2008. This blog says David R. Ray was sunk on the 11th, not the 24th. --Dual Freq (talk) 02:34, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
It looks like an official USS Lake Erie blog and includes sinkex pictures from the 11th and talks about sinking David R. Ray. It seems to be official enough and has been linked from Lake Eries official USN website. Its enough to convince me that this was not the ship sunk on the 23rd. --Dual Freq (talk) 02:56, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Fletcher was scheduled to sinkex also, so the sub target could have been ex-Cushing or ex-Fletcher. --Dual Freq (talk) 03:20, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
USS Fletcher's website reports that it was her that was sunk in that CBASS firing. The USS Lake Erie blog seems to confirm that David R Ray was sunk by missiles and gunfire. David Biddulph (talk) 10:24, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ex-DD-971 was sunk on 11 July by an MK 48 Mod 7 CBASS fired by HMAS Waller. High res pictures are available.[1] 203.7.140.3 (talk) 04:10, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Link the photo that shows DD-971 or says David R Ray. There were 3 Spruance Destroyers set to be sunk during RIMPAC and we have an official blog stating the David R Ray was sunk earlier in the month. The link you provided doesn't provide a date and doesn't say which Spruance was sunk, though it looks like it may have been ex-Fletcher on the 16th. --Dual Freq (talk) 11:27, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
