the scope of this page: Voluntary edit

It seems to me that this page should be moved and incorporated into a page called "Voluntary (music)". A voluntary is a piece composed in a free manner, usually an organ piece played before or after a church service. It is used as a title by Baroque composers. Gibbons, Blow, Purcell et al should be mentioned, plus the fact that some of them prefer the term "fantasia" or "fancy" or even "fugue". All this needs an article. A trumpet voluntary is a special kind of voluntary. I suggest it could either be merged into a page on the voluntary, or possibly retained as such, but a separate article on the more general voluntary created. What are people's views?Hikitsurisan (talk) 08:13, 2 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

A colleague evidently opined that the section heading would better include, in place of << Voluntary >> the link << Voluntary (music) >> and also, within the signed comment, linkified << Voluntary (music) >> into << Voluntary (music) >>.
The newly linked page did not exist at the time of User:Hikitsurisan's above comment, but had been created a week before the changes to that comment. I have restored the original comment so the history and attribution of the discussion is clear, and i have just provided the information that the other colleague wanted available here.

Yes! This is a good example of proper encylopedic thinking. The present article, which does not stop to tell what a "Voluntary' is, will make a good subsection.— Preceding unsigned comment added by {} (talk • contribs) 06:11, 15 July 2008‎ Wetman
The principal shortcoming of the accompanying article is not its independence, but its combining of the functions of an article on the topic "Trumpet voluntary" and an apparently needed Dab page for the term "Trumpet Voluntary". (The differing casing is an important side aspect of my point.) I doubt we need to cover the topic of trumpet voluntaries separately from the topic of (musical) voluntaries in general, but we do need the Dab: at least the Prince of Denmark's March, and presumably the Stanley TV for which we have the sound sample, need to be in the body of the Dab. And the article or section covering the same ground as the current Trumpet Voluntary article (which should be recased "Trumpet voluntary" if an article, and downcased at least as to "voluntary" (and, depending on wording, perhaps also "trumpet") within the title of the proposed section of what is currently titled Voluntary (music).
It should, however be also noted that for page-finding purposes, trumpet voluntary and Trumpet Voluntary are easily confused, and they should not both be page titles (except if at least one is a redirect to a Dab or HatNote-Dab'd article). My own opinion is that Trumpet Voluntary probably should Rdr to Prince of Denmark's March, which should carry
or
or -- if my notion is accepted, that Voluntary should cover musical voluntaries as the primary topic, with the Dab moving to Voluntary (disambiguation), then --
(where the respective "Trumpet voluntaries" links must be hovered to see that, tho the (section-)piped titles are identical, the pages containing the section differ).

That isn't Stanley's Trumpet Voluntary, it's someone playing a rough approximation of it. It's awful. 86.171.170.180 (talk) 07:10, 16 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
