One part of this says that Robert Johnson never told the story of "selling his soul", while a few sentences later it says he did, and that he "borrowed" it from Tommy Johnson. Someone needs to make a decision on this...

Merging "Canned Heat Blues" here

I suggested merging the Canned Heat Blues article into Tommy Johnson because it does not seem important enough (and doesn't seem to have enough material) to merit its own article. Selling Soul Erroneously Attributed to Robert Johnson

I am not sure why this article says that the story of Tommy Johnson selling his soul was later erroneously attributed to Robert Johnson. Why can't they both have this in common. I doubt that this story of selling one's soul was just a matter of a mistaken identity because they share the same last name, especially since Robert Johnson has two songs about his encounter with the devil("crossroads" and "me and the devil blues"). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.196.162.32 (talk) 05:50, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

I suspect it's because Robert Johnson is better known, so people assume it's a reference to him, when it's clearly a reference to a less well known musician. —MiguelMunoz (talk) 11:27, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

According to what the guys at Radiolab dug up, the story of a blues musician selling his soul to the Devil is about Tommy Johnson, not Robert Johnson. Dave Evans recorded an interview with Tommy Johnson's brother, LeDell Johnson, who told the story of Tommy Johnson selling his soul to the Devil by a crossroads. Pete Welding was then presented with the recording of this intervew, and apparently decided that Robert Johnson, with his song about the Devil and the song "Crossroads", would fit well into that story rather than Tommy Johnson. He then published an article claiming just that, based on an interview he had done with Son House who had known Robert Johnson. Pete Welding is assumed to have been asking leading questions in order to base the statements in his article on this interview. There is a big effort made by Tommy Johnson's family to clear out this misconception and get Tommy Johnson recognized for his influence on the blues. I might add this to the article myself, if no one else more familiar with the Wiki is going to take on doing it, as I'm completely new here. MagnusOxlund (talk) 19:45, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

The article claims the erroneous attribution occurred post 1971, which doesn't make much sense to anybody with a passing familiarity with the British blues boom of the 1960s. Gwladys24 (talk) 23:07, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
