Cripes edit

Anyone http://www.sea-us.org.au/roxby/bb-abc.html interested in the politics of water within the dieri history and the marree stuff? I am not sure which way to take this or whether it belongs elsewhere SatuSuro 12:50, 22 June 2008 (UTC) My sense of geography for that part of sa might have brought an extra dimension that this rt might not need - but the dierri make claim to the desert and the story above suggests there is a difficult history - might need a map to make sure the average reader know where it is all at SatuSuro 12:56, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Birdsville Track + Kopperamanna and other localities edit

The film The Back of Beyond probably included images of the Tirari as it went to Kopperamanna, South Australia - a locality in the desert about which we have as yet no article apparently.

I assume the Birdsville Track passes through the desert

Other localities within the desert according to http://maps.bonzle.com/c/a?a=p&p=60300&cmd=sp are:

I am still trying to come to grips with the geography --Matilda talk 23:43, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thats two of us SatuSuro 01:43, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

It would seem to have a proper perspective for this article geographically or locationallly the Lake Eyre National Park needs to go beyond the usual skeletal national park stub mode SatuSuro 02:03, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Also edit

The first item above titled cripes suggested a connection with diari people and water issues - Great Artesian Basin and Olympic Dam would also be involved if anyone can tackle the connection with the tirari - if there is one SatuSuro 06:23, 23 June 2008 (UTC) ... and the Lake Eyre basin and the land rights issues between the Arabana people for whom we haven't yet got an article and the Dieri ... and I don't know what to do about Tindale's claim that the Tirari are not the same as the Dieri (which is not related to the background briefing article) .. and was the Marree man in the Tirari (which is also not related to the background briefing article)? ... and is there mining in the desert - I have no idea what "near Roxby Downs" might mean but out there it often means to the nearest 1,000 miles or so - so yes we need a map and there is plenty of upside potential to add to this article :-) --Matilda talk 06:40, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ok another edit

There is also the grouping of the Tirari with Stuart Stony desert at Deserts and xeric shrublands as well as at http://www.nationalgeographic.com/wildworld/profiles/terrestrial/aa/aa1309.html SatuSuro 13:26, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

William Creek edit

As reference point? - it is west of lake eyre and not really related unless coober pedy is the point of reference? Leigh Creek and Maree would be far more approrpiate as they are on the birdsville line to adelaide anyways SatuSuro 01:09, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The Tirari Desert includes and extends from the east of the Lake Eyre National Park, enclosing a southern arm that is the Lake Eyre south, to a point in the south on the Oodnadatta Track, near ruins at Curdimurka.[1] This includes the lowest point in Australia which should be mentioned in the article and possibly the harshest place in the country. I have a 2004 Collins World Atlas showing the Tirari Desert centered between the Birdsville Track and Lake Mulapula, east of Lake Eyre North. The other map from the source above shows the desert positioned to the north east of Lake Eyre North centered over Warburton Creek north of a smaller lake called Koolkooltinnie Lake. The map and the related text suggest the western boundary of the desert would be Lewis Bay in the north and a point 57 kms east of William Creek called ABC Bay on Lake Eyre North. I could email you jps later today, if you want. - Shiftchange (talk) 04:30, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The HEMA Fourth edition Australia's Great Desert Tracks South East Sheet ISBN 10-1-86500-126-7 has the tirari desert at the east side of north lake eyre only so the stuff above about william creek doesnt crack it on this - kalmurina homestead seems to be northern reference point and the birdsville track the eastern - and 'river clayton?' might approximate as the southern boundary some 50 km n e of marree.

Also the comment above about Lake Mullapula as a reference point http://www.ga.gov.au/bin/gazd01?rec=198467 suggests it as a central point SatuSuro 04:46, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Settlements edit

Hmmm - we probably need to add more about indigenous people living in the area - in the present and in the past ... I have put the current section up with location as for me it helps to explain the location but now it is separate from the Dieri which makes i look eurocentric which was not my intention. --Matilda talk 20:32, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Marree man edit

Today's on this day: Portal:Australia/Anniversaries/June/June 26 features # 1998 - The Marree Man geoglyph appears in the desert near Marree, South Australia. Was it this desert? Still struggling with the geography :-(

Hmm when I read the article it says It lies on a plateau at Finnis Springs 60 km west of the township of Marree in central South Australia. Looking at Google maps it is just south of Lake Eyre so I guess not. --Matilda talk 00:56, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
