I am interested in this article because my grandfather and his oldest brother worked for Tidewater in Bayonne, before moving to California in 1920 to work at Associated Oil's Avon refinery (near Concord in the Bay Area) in 1920.

I am confused by this seeming non sequitur in the text:

"In 1928, Pacific Western Oil Corporation incorporated as a holding company for Edward L. Doheny and family which subsequently came under the control of J. Paul Getty."

What relation was there between Pacific Western and Tidewater Associated? I remember from conversations with my grandfather that J. Paul Getty was involved with Tidewater Associated, but I am not sure how.

I agree that the sentence quoted above seems irrelevant so I have removed it from the article. Please replace it, if you can make it relevant. Biscuittin (talk) 09:48, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Getty

Tidewater ended as a holding company

AFAIK Tidewater ended as a holding company where each share of Tidewater (quietly) represented two shares of Getty Oil. I can't recall if Tidewater shareholders could surrender their shares for Getty shares, but Tidewater didn't go out of its way to advertise it. IIRC the shares were thinly traded and often priced not far above the Getty share price, i.e. far below their underlying value, which ensured that shares that appeared on the exchange tended to be purchased for Getty who didn't sell which only contributed to the thin trading and peculiar share price. They eventually did dissolve and distribute Getty shares, but I thought that was in 1976 when Getty died, not 1966. PolychromePlatypus (talk) 19:53, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
