Did you know... that when he transferred his house(pictured) near Millerton, New York, to his sons, Thomas N. Wheeler required that they allow their older sister to live there for the rest of her life?

The article states that "Mary Wheeler defaulted on the mortgage and lost the house in 1897, taking it out of the Wheeler family after almost a century." If the family had acquired the house more than 100 years earlier, why was it (still) under mortgage? This should be explained.
