Although several sources give 1st May 1915 as his date of birth, Cree family papers and Australian records give 1st May 1914. I am therefore about to change it to the latter. Spathaky (talk) 22:06, 20 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

You must have a reliable source for a different date - Cree family papers count as "Own Research". You should not otherwise replace a date that is cited from reliable sources - but you may add a footnote to highlight an issue. Motmit (talk) 22:15, 20 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

I would have thought Australian Government Naval Service Records (which I referenced in addition to Cree family records) was pretty reliable - more so than an obituary in SMH. However I will add another official source, the Indexes to Births at the General Register Office for Scotland in Edinburgh. These are publicly available documents and the relevant index shows the year of birth as 1914. Spathaky (talk) 18:53, 21 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

It has niggled me slightly since this article was created that TSC has been described as "an Australian rower". I don't claim to know the answer. The relevant facts are:

He was born in Scotland.

He and his mother emigrated to Australia at the age of 5 or 6 following the death in action of his father.

He attended Cambridge University where he distinguished himself at rowing.

He represented Great Britain at rowing in the 1936 Olympic Games. (Probably not relevat: 12 of Australia's 32 competitors were rowers, more than any other sport)

- He served in the Australian Navy through WWII and lived in Australia until his death in 1990.

It's the conjunction of Australian and rower that grates.
