Companions edit

The BBC website lists the Brig, Benton, and Yates as companions. Since this is pretty much as official as it gets, should we add them to his list? -Merlin Storm — Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.251.162.122 (talk) 23:59, 1 February 2007

David Warner's Third Doctor mention edit

Is it possible to have hear mention of David Warner's Third Doctor from the Unbound series? Just a small section down below about it. --Victory93 (talk) 04:39, 12 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Companions, again edit

all three are given full-page treatment (the Brig actually gets less space than Sarah-Jane Smith), which marks them as "companions" in contrast to the "allies" such as Kamelion who get a small box within a page. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:42, 9 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

While we have been through this before (on various talk pages) some sources - both those of the 80s and 90s and those more recent treat these three characters differently then the rest of the companions that traveled in the TARDIS. In fact that travel has been one of the criteria for being called a companion. The Brig (not counting the 5 Drs where he is specifically referred to as a companion) and Benton are only transported to Omega's planet in the TARDIS in The 3 Drs and then it isn't under the T's power. I can't remember if Yates is ever even in the control room at the moment but I know that the rest you will be able to refresh my memory. Now this is WP:OR on my part. As to the current info on the Beeb's website I have had problems with it as it seems to have been compiled by people not conversant with the distinctions of the past. Having said all that I also know that things change over the years and that there are other sources from the past and present do list them as companions. If we are to mention them in this article I would prefer that, rather then have them in the infobox, we do it under some heading like we use here Companion (Doctor Who)#Disputed. This would allow for the fact that, while they were a large part of the show, their function was different from that of Liz, Jo and Sarah Jane. MarnetteD | Talk 16:38, 9 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Some text list the Brig, Mike and Benton as companions. Contemporary articles don't mention them as such. Letts and Dicks specifically said that they inherited the UNIT format from their precedessors. Given that, this ambiguity should be reflected in the articles (NPOV) rather than unambiguously considering them as companions (POV). Having said that, Benton did replace Jamie in The Three Doctors and the Brig did function as the second Doctor's companion in The Five Doctors. This should probably also be mentioned. Personality and Appearance edit

There are a lot of issues with how these two sections are written, starting with the lack of references, but the fan-ish tone is so much in evidence (overemphasis, for example, on Pertwee's "listen to me" phrase, which is not nearly so emphatic as the article suggests--it was a measured "Now you listen to me (pause)" each word delivered slowly, certainly no need for bold/italics on "listen" as though he were losing his head and shouting). I don't have time to fix up Personality but I can certainly re-write Appearance (which is rather confused at points: how is "charismatic" an aspect of appearance?) with proper references, as I have the design special of Doctor Who magazine. I've done this for two out of the first seven Doctors and will get around to all seven at some point. I am hoping someone else can tackle Personality (maybe start by trimming it).
