Critics don't like things that stray from their classical non-mainstream beliefs

Critics don't like things that stray from their classical non-mainstream beliefs, so I wonder if the movie would have done well in wide release if critics weren't able to shoot it down. Remember, these are the same critics that seriously poo-pooed the first Star Wars movie (before it was released; not after they retrospectively noticed that everyone liked it). Personally, I loathe ballet and love science fiction and fantasy, so I was (and still am) really looking forward to this movie. I like the idea of a modern reinvention of a classic tale (that's been way too over-repeated in the classic ballet style).
