I just saw this again.The use of Black and White film, while also making the movie look dated as in the '30's, also gave the movie that Ansel Adams stark shadow quality induplicable (?) with color. The symbolism of the arched, church steeple-like attic room where Powell first kills; the barn owl stalking, then mercilessly getting its bunny prey; the waving of Harper's hair with the river grass, sleeplike in a trance; are so well defined as to be a real thrill.
