I just read the novella and it seemed to me that the entity was trying to prevent the destruction of the world because it would cause the collapse of several thousand other timelines, as well, because of reverberations. The reason it tries to stop Baird from writing the Hemingway pastiche is because it will become the determining factor in the attitudes of the leaders of the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. in 2006. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.169.234.108 (talk) 14:55, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • No, it's pretty clear that the entity is trying to destroy humanity. -- Resuna (talk) 13:10, 29 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Disagree, it is clear that the Hemingway entity is part of a pseudo-ethical organization charged with keeping the Omniverse safe and orderly. They keep being puzzled by the problems surrounding John Baird, which they would not have been had their aim been the 'destruction of humanity'. BTW, this is one of the worst SF books I have ever read, culminating in an unparalleled scene of gratuitous and graphic violence. The book as little subtlety and no resolution, as its conclusion is nothing more than a cheap fast and painful loop back through the superficial history of Hemingway the writer.
