Early closing of pubs during transmission of The Forsyte Saga

Although attested by the reference to Masterpiece Theatre, I would question whether this statement is accurate (the source is of course US and so would have no specific knowledge of the UK). I can remember well the showing of the The Forsyte Saga on BBC1, as it made such an impression on me: it was a subject of conversation among family and friends. It was shown at 7.25, and I can remember hearing of clergymen who brought forward the time of their evening services (typically 6.00 or 6.30 in most of the UK at the time) so that their congregations could get home in time for 7.25. This would therefore seem to be accurate. But at the time public houses were generally open for two separate 'opening times' on Sundays: from around 12 noon until 2pm (perhaps later) and then from 6.00 p.m. (or perhaps 7.00) until 10.30. Opening was regulated by strict licensing. Publicans may well have complained that their pubs were nearly empty on Sunday evenings, or that customers came in only later, but, as for closing early: it just doesn't fit with the factual background. Theme music associated with The Forsyte Saga

The article page refers to the opening and closing theme music being "Halcyon Days", the opening movement from "The Three Elizabeths" suite by Eric Coates. IMDB, slightly less specifically, refers to this as providing the theme music. I followed the series when it was first broadcast on BBC1, and, whilst "Halcyon Days" sounds familiar, I have a recollection of the "Triumphal March" from "Caractacus" by Elgar being used, perhaps only as a closing theme: or it may have been used to close the final episode, when the credits included all the actors who had participated throughout the series. Can anyone verify this - perhaps someone who has the DVD set - or is my memory deceiving me?Ntmr (talk) 15:43, 16 April 2016 (UTC)

Original BBC2 transmission dates

The lead says the series 'was originally shown in twenty-six episodes on Saturday evenings between 7 January and 1 July 1967 on BBC2, at a time when only a small proportion of the population had television sets able to receive the channel. It was therefore the Sunday night repeat run on BBC1, starting on 8 September 1968, that secured the programme's success with 18 million tuning in for the final episode in 1969'.

My mother's dairy entry for Tuesday 10 January 1967 says 'Forsyte Saga 10.15 BBC2', and then there is an entry on Saturday 14 Jan saying 'Forsyte Sage 8.0'.
