Affiliates edit

Does anyone know of any more affiliates? WGCB-TV is one. (Tak5035 (talk) 14:35, 21 May 2009 (UTC))Reply

Proposed Changes edit

The opening line uses the phrase "so-called" and uses the network's main web site page as reference. Propose to remove the "so-called" as it violates the Wiki NPOV Principle. Please comment below for thoughts. Thanks! (jrcplanet (talk) 21 June 2010 ) —Preceding undated comment added 16:29, 21 July 2010 (UTC).Reply

Requested move 18 February 2020 edit

The result of the move request was: Moved to The Family Channel (American TV network, founded 2008) as suggested in the discussion. The redirect The Family Channel (United States) should not be moved because it's a redirect, so is retargeted to the disambiguation page (which has been amended), and a new redirect The Family Channel (American TV network, founded 1990) is created to target History of Freeform (TV channel)#The Family Channel. There may be other redirects that require retargeting as a result of this move. If there is a need to change "network" to "channel" then this should be a separate RM. The Family Channel (American TV network) → ? – also The Family Channel (United States). These two networks/channels called "The Family Channel" are for two different networks, by two different entities that operated in the United States in different time periods. However, while I realize this is not a standard proposal, as one is an article and the other is a redirect, almost all the google search results I get when searching for "The Family Channel" are for the 1980s-1990s channel. Even when viewing the Page views one can see that the page History of Freeform (TV channel) gets much more page views. While by itself not enough, looking at how high the page views are for The Family Channel, the dab page, which even it has a higher monthly view count than this page (and the dab page doesn't even link to the history page), suggests that readers are not landing on the page they are looking for. This scenario while not standard, is causing harm that a hatnote cannot solve. Not only can readers be confused (see WP:ASTONISH), even editors are incorrectly linking articles to the wrong "The Family Channel" - Solid Gold (TV series) links here instead of to the original network, and Category:The Family Channel original programming is meant for the original network as well. All this points to me that the title "The Family Channel (American TV network)" and it's derivatives (including "The Family Channel (United States)") are ambiguous (see WP:INCDAB) and should be further disambiguated to differentiate between the two, and the title redirected to the dab page. This will allow easier finding for readers, and allow bot warnings for editors linking to the incorrect page. Regarding the proposed names, I really have no clue what the optimal names should be as Wikipedia:Naming conventions (broadcasting) does not give an example for such situations. • Comment – The latter is just a redirect, but it predates the former. Based on that, if any of them should be at The Family Channel (American TV network), it's the latter (the one that later became Fox Family, ABC Family, and then Freeform) not the former...
But in this instance, I think we're going to have to go with something awkward like, The Family Channel (American TV network, founded 1990), and The Family Channel (American TV network, founded 2008). I'm not sure I see any other solution... --IJBall (contribstalk) 17:57, 18 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
    • Seeing as there are no other options presented, I'll support this. If anyone proposes an alternative, please ping me. --Gonnym (talk) 11:12, 28 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Comments. First there is a link from the the dab page to the History of Freeform via vis the The CBN Family Channel|Freeform bar wlink as The CBN Family Channel redirects to the History of Freeform. Secondly, they are not both TV networks. The original CBN/Fox/ABC Family Channel is a TV channel as it aired via cable per WP:NC-BC, while the current one is a TV network per WP:NC-BC. The CBN Family Channel & The Family Channel (United States) should be redirects to Freeform (TV channel) not History of Freeform. Might those corrections fix the matter? Not sure why they are depreciating radio/TV channel, as a cable network has to start at one channel before growing to be come a network. And likely the cable networks would decrease the number of channels down as cable contracts more. Spshu (talk) 22:05, 5 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
    • From previous discussions, in the US TV system it seems that the usage is "network". You say that CBN is a channel, yet Christian Broadcasting Network says Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) is an American conservative evangelical Christian religious television network, is placed in Category:Evangelical television networks and Category:American television networks. There is also no Category:American television channels. Regarding the hatnote, I've explained in the nomination why a real link is needed. --Gonnym (talk) 07:03, 6 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

The Family Channel (American TV network, founded 2008)The Family Channel (2008 American TV network) – As much as I hate the year being included in the title as the original is now clearly under a different name, if the year has to be in it, then why not shorten the title this way? JE98 (talk) 20:24, 1 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • That works also. --Gonnym (talk) 20:40, 1 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose - makes it seem like the network was only active a single year. I don't think its an improvement on the current title. -- Netoholic @ 06:16, 2 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per Netoholic. -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:44, 5 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose – it took us some time to come up with the current arrangement, and it's by far the best option. This proposal is worse. --IJBall (contribstalk) 20:35, 8 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
