Move? edit

The title is a bit cumbersome; and it's usually referred to as "The Castle, Newcastle" isn't it? Is it worth moving the page to that title? Swanny18 (talk) 18:57, 25 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

OK, done. Swanny18 (talk) 08:09, 6 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Change of name edit

I am the marketing officer at the Castle Keep and Black Gate. Could the name of this article please be changed to 'Newcastle Castle' to reflect the two buildings' recent rebranding. More indepth information is available to view here: http://www.newcastlegateshead.com/things-to-do/newcastle-castle-p23031 Pc92 (talk) 12:46, 11 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

This article was titled "Newcastle Castle" until March 2009. It was then moved (see above) to "The Castle, Newcastle" on the basis that at least two editors thought "Newcastle Castle" was a bit cumbersome. I am not sure we should be reversing that view simply because the branding has changed but would welcome other views. Dormskirk (talk) 20:29, 11 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Dormskirk. The major issue is the fact that Wikipedia is robotically linked in with our Facebook, Instagram and Bing Maps accounts, so that means we have a constant deluge of visitors 'checking in' at what is essentially an inactive attraction page, which we are not permitted to edit. Ammending the Wiki title would have the advantage of fixing this problem, plus enhancing brand recognition, following the recent Heritage Lottery Funded-project to get the attraction back on the map. Thanks in advance for your cooperation Pc92 (talk) 07:23, 17 August 2015 (UTC) pc92Reply
I take the point but unfortunately Newcastle Castle is already taken by a disambiguation page (to distinguish with the castle at Bridgend) so we would have to come up with another name and "Newcastle Castle, Newcastle" would be very cumbersome. I am open to suggestions! Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 20:23, 17 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

How about 'Newcastle Castle (Newcastle upon Tyne)'? It retains the current name of the attraction (agreed to through committee by The Heart of the City Partnership i.e. Newcastle City Council, St Nicholas Cathedral and The Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne), while the brackets hopefully break it up enough for it to not sound too cumbersome. 80.229.11.230 (talk) 10:04, 18 August 2015 (UTC) pc92Reply

On Wikpedia it is a US convention to put the location in brackets afterwards; the British equivalent would be "Newcastle Castle, Newcastle upon Tyne". Dormskirk (talk) 19:56, 18 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
As I was the one who moved this (all those years ago) I have to repeat, "Newcastle Castle" is cumbersome. And why on earth did this committee choose that as the name? As far as I remember no-one there calls it that, it was always simply “the Castle”.
I also notice that the name was changed in the lead sentence and throughout to the new brand-name, then reversed with the explanation “conform to article title” then changed again, which constitutes a slow but steady edit war.
So I've put the text back to where it was (the status quo ante), and suggest the matter be resolved by discussion, not by force majeur.
The principle behind article titles on WP is to use the common name ie. what people actually call it; is there any evidence the brand name being suggested is in common use? Or are you seeking to use WP to popularize a new coining? Swanny18 (talk) 22:22, 19 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Agreed that "Newcastle Castle" is cumbersome and that "The Castle, Newcastle" should be retained. I have not heard anyone refer to it as "Newcastle Castle". Dormskirk (talk) 22:35, 19 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Haunted Category edit

The article contains no sources, reliable or otherwise, which report the castle as being “haunted”. Would anyone object if I removed the Haunted Cat? KJP1 (talk) 07:33, 9 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

I would support this removal. If someone comes back with an RS (I'm guessing this would be an RS for discussion of haunting claims rather than the actual direct evidence of the ghostly activity ... then it can always be reinstated. But no, if there is nothing in an article to sustain a cat, we aren't meant to keep it, are we? Best wishes DBaK (talk) 09:31, 9 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Good to hear from you. I’ll take it out. As you say, an RS reporting on the rumours of haunting would be fine. Although, they are mostly just mentions of filming by Most Haunted! KJP1 (talk) 09:49, 9 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
